    Possessed!

Scott Robertson assesses ‘possessed’ All Black’s performance against Boks

‘Razor’ fronted the media on Sunday morning and was asked to assess Ethan Blackadder’s performance.

This South Africa side are like England were in their golden era from 2001-3, super ruthless with smart players and leaders all over their squad. They are very tough to beat, especially at Ellis Park.

I take heart from the ABs performance and that it is so obvious now what needs fixing.

I also think it's going to be tough for the Boks to keep this standard up for many more years. Most of their leading forwards are in the 30s and I don't think they will all be there by the 2027 RWC.

Taylor and Lomax offered more around field than Mnonambi and Malherbe.

I honestly believe Lomax is the best tighthead prop in the world at the moment. Springboks props tend to be overrated as their scrum has them benefit from having probably the strongest second rowers in the world.

P.S: trust me, I'm an expert in having expertise on stuff

Look here’s two immutable facts that will hopefully move us all to next week’s second match thread

    1. Brace joins a long list of ‘blind, Irish referees’

    2. NZ, biggest choke since Michael Hutchence

Throwing out Hutchence to distract us from the fact Brace is Welsh isn't going to work.

Born in Wales and wants nothing to do with Wales
    He’s made his bed

So the Welsh don't make their beds? Ok, got it!

Born in Cardiff, lived between Ireland and Wales. University in England.

    Represented Belgium at international level.

    Refs for Ireland.

    Not our bed to make.

I personally think Frans is excellent, but the match on Saturday showed that without the Etzebeth horsepower he’s containable. Nché is an excellent technical LH and maybe world’s best, and is now offering more around pitch.

Lomax is a big body and packs very straight, so is definitely right up there. Can’t think of any NH THs better.

    1. Not sure how he found the line.
    2. He wasn't Kiwi and the ABs were underdogs.

Regardless of whether the ABs were favourites or underdogs they had the opportunity to run away with the match and choked. Fact.

It is the signature of a team that is a work in progress, playing in the shadow of a powerful rival. In a way it reminds me of the ABs at the time of the great Aussie team of the 90s(?) who seemed to find ways not to win the Bledisloe for years. Hopefully they will work it out. But there would appear to be many holes to fill yet

@antipodean play it forward two frames after Darry tries to fight forward

Edit: or rather don’t - this picture illustrates my point just as well. Eben can’t know whether Darry’s got a knee down.

So he isn’t going to release him unless he gets a call from the ref.

Darry knows his knees hit the deck so he knows he’s been tackled.

He needs to release. But he doesn’t.

    Penalty Green.

Smuts, you are coming across as a massive idiot.

    Cease and desist

This match thread keeps on giving. I've finally caught up. Anyway...

Press pointed out that we are 0-34 in the last twenty mins for the RC.

And the full story is that in the 3 RC games so far, the ABs last scored in the 52nd, 41st and 51st minute.

    OK. Rewatched 60 to 75.

Blacks on top of Bomb Squad Boks from 60 - 63 when they get kickable penalty.

APPALLING OPTION. Take the kick. Over and game over. Miss and you get ball back.

Then we try Boks shift maul on them. WTF! We had edge in maul so KISS. A few phases and probably another pen or try.

They get lucky turnover and we try two Rieko specials, the second leading to another turnover.

    WHY CHANGE A WINNING GAME?

That is where we took foot off throat.

That set move from the line-out was bizarre, I couldn't believe we tried it after the earlier success we had mauling from the top. I agree, that was the losing of the game, we should have buried them anyway never mind the Mbonabi try that shouldn't have stood.

We should blame ourselves for not finishing them off when we had the chance to against a decent, but overrated Boks outfit. Like, they're number 1, but no standout.

Cane Kolisi impact. Isn't Kolisi falling in Codie's tackle?

To me it seems more he falls onto Cane rather than Cane actually pulling trigger on tackle, which he seems to do after contact.

    An Andrew Porter soak tackle.

Or an Ethan Blackadder "receiving" tackle to quote Gardiner.

@Jet at first I thought that, but Kolisi is falling in Codie tackle. At the very least a mitigating factor.

    No such excuse for Porter.

I finally got around to watching the hit. I think Kolisi was falling In Taylor's tackle, and Cane did tackle quite upright. I don't believe there was any malice. But jeez it happens so fast, it highlights how dynamic the game is and the margins between getting away with a shot like that, getting a YC or getting a RC are super fine, and on another day Cane could have had any one of those three outcomes
