Can anyone say who was in the leadership group at the time? Pretty tough for Sam, sounded like a spur of the moment thing and emotions were high.

I'm a little surprised at the love the other players had for Fozzie. I'm no Fozzie basher, but given the results and public pressure I would have thought the leadership group might have welcomed someone new. Unless they were concerned about Razor trying to change things up too much.

Wasn’t Fozzie someone that everyone liked on the whole ? ( in spite of any coaching shortcomings )

Id say this. People mostly stand by someone who rates them highly. Robertson for most non Crusaders was an unknown factor. There would have also been a concern of Crusdaer bias if he was appointed with the RWC close

Like What ? he could hardly isolate himself from the Rest of the leadership group he had to stick with the rest of the group and support them.

Of course he could. As it is he comes across as a bit pathetic and weak

We're talking about the bloke that played lock for the All Blacks over 150 times? Won two RWCs?

He comes across as pathetic and weak in this situation

He isn't prepared to stand by an action he took. Not a leader rather than just a (weak) follower. I was disappointed when I read this

Haha nice try. Pretty naive view of the situation.

He goes out and says something and watch the media (and a couple of others) throw him under a bus. Destabilising the RWC prep even more.

@No-Quarter have to think it was SW, Cane, BBBR, Ardie, Smith, Coles, BB, Mounga...

If it was that big with all of those players, I’d dare say it would’ve been quite fracturing had one player gone out!

He doesn't have to go to the media with anything, all he needed to do was just not go with the rest to the CEO. Then he's made his stand.

NB: This isn't me agreeing with winger.

From reading a lot of the posts on this thread before the article I thought it would be more than he was just sitting on the fence/didn't have a preferred coach/and went to visit the CEO despite not thinking it was a good idea.

For me the takeaway is that the Coach selection process has a big issue in that the support team align themselves with a specific candidate and it becomes a package.

An alternative would be to select the coach individually and then to work with the chosen individual to appoint support team on merit.

By way of example, if Foz appointed then ask Ryan to make himself available as candidate for forward coach.

@Dan54 my take on it was that he wouldn't afford himself an opinion on who he wanted as coach, out of loyalty to the team, all the coaches involved, and the jersey

I genuinely confused what Sam means.
I a real Sam W fan, but I don't think he is quite making sense.
He says players shoudn't express opinion of coaches, and then says he was part of group that got Plumtree and Moaar sacked.
And he no longer a player so ne reason he can't express his opinion now.
He was one of the signatories wanting the Silver Lake deal changed, and the letter threatening to take professional rugby away from NZR, so I not sure what he thinks is his place to have opinion on.

The clear thing I get out of the Sam Whitelock piece is that it is madness to expect applicants for the ABs Head Coach job to have all their assistants in place prior to appointment.

Appoint the best Head Coach. Then appoint the best Assistant Coaches.

The most capped All Black in history speaks for the record about his storied career, spanning four World Cups, nine Super Rugby finals and 153 appearances in...

I'd like to read it, esp interested in what he thinks about Joe Schmidt. Also wondering whether his suggestion (pick the best coaches, not the best prepicked coaching team as a package) is possible. There seems to be some opinion on the quality (or is it experience) of Foster, but it is veiled if there. Found the extracts interesting but hard in places to really see his opinion.
Seems a highly principled person, IMO. Doesn't seem pathetic and weak at all. Just guarded. Also very interested in where he thinks the early lineouts went wrong.

Unless he calls out some teammates for being Grade A pricks ( thanks for the memories Norm ) I won’t have much interest aside from flicking through it at whitcoulls on a rainy day.

I’ve got maybe 40 or 50 Rugby biographies on the shelf. I seem to inherit quite a few. I tend not to actually finish any of them but they’re ok to flick through here and there.

Hard to write a tell-all rugby book if you're a player in NZ.
It's such an incestuous little circle and many people want careers in rugby and broadcasting in the future.
