@MN5 That'll teach me for trying to come up with an analogy relatable to the common man.

May be if I replace "carton of milk" with "a bottle of fizzy drink and a pack of cigs for his Mum" that would be more colloquial??

On the assumption the Barret's don't have business interests in the soda or tobacco industries so they'd never have to buy them either.

My gut says Fergus Burke will have a strong finish to Super Rugby and snatch an AB shirt.

    FABFB it is!

I wonder how Razor will want our backline to play? Will he persist with playing flat, or will we play deeper? If he has a specific way he wants his 10 to play hopefully it will help whoever is there to be more controlled than we've come accustomed to lately

If BB starts at 10 again for the ABs i'll kick a cat

Yup, I'm not thrilled about BB being back. As a running 10, you have a shorter shelflife than a kicking 10 and he'd reached his sell by around 2019/2020. The only way he should be at 10 in 2024 or 2025 is if/when the ABs debut an uncapped midfield duo on his outside.

    This is the BIG QUESTION.

You'd like to to think the AB & SR coaches are co-ordinated on where players play as well

The SR coaches will do what is best for their team, and Robertson can't complain as he did exactly the same thing.

Too much to hope for, I guess.

Imagine setting up debut midfielders for failure.

@Bones There is no sterner test for a newbie midfield combo than having Barrett on your inside. If the papers give you a 6 out of 10 rating as AB midfielder and Barrett was playing at first five, everyone knows that's like an 8 out of 10 playing outside any other 1st five.

I can just picture the diplomatic stuff article:
*On a night day when the all black number 10 had a forgettable outing, new caps X and Y made a serviceable first foray into the cauldron that is test rugby...

Barrett won't technically be available for the July Tests (unless there's an injury etc) even if he signs a new deal with NZR.

It's likely McKenzie and Perofeta will be selected in the first squad of the year alongside one young gun.

I agree with some others on here that Sullivan looks a better prospect at fullback (and with Jordie moving to the midfield, that's now looking like a far better long-term option for him than in the past). I think Brett Cameron is probably the current next cab off the ranks and Havili will almost certainly be in the squad too, and he might end up playing 10 for the Crusaders.

A very left-field option could be Rameka Poihipi. As with many other 'options', however, that's dependent on him getting some minutes there during Super Rugby, which is far from guaranteed.

Cashmore needs to get significant game time at SR level first.

He probably wouldn't have even started for BOP if Trask was fit, so likely got more NPC time than expected.

I suspect that "whoever starts at the Crusaders" is pretty good guess. 😔

That is quite the left-field option you mentioned there. Any particular reason (ito the qualities that he possesses) that makes you think he can make the switch? Just curious.

@Punch_up from what I've seen, he's a smart, well-rounded player. Had at least one go at ten for the chiefs this year didn't he?

Yes, against the Force. Poihipi was a 1st 5 at school, but more suited to 12 now.

Yeah, I think you're spot on re him playing at ten for one game. I think his standout quality is at times making lightning fast decisions (which is a good trait to at 10 or midfield). Haven't considered him before tbh.

Jesus, can we please move on from Havili at 10? If it’s said often enough it might happen and that would be disastrous. And if he ends up having to play there for the Saders they are fucked. I don't want him anywhere near the Black 10 jersey.

Halfpenny sparked rumours this week as he expressed an open interest in the No 10 jersey vacated by Mo’unga, although emphasised he is very much a fullback at heart.

Penney shut down the chat over any potential shift, and also denied any likelihood of seeing David Havili move into first five-eighth.

“It’s a great opportunity for someone to put their hand up,” he said. “Taha (Kemara) has been here for a season now and is a very talented individual, and Rivez (Reihana) matured and led Northland around really effectively.

Dave's started two or three times at 10 for the Crusaders and I think we might have lost all of them. He will be 29 next month.

Will only happen in an emergency for the Crusaders. Never happening for the ABs.
