BTW if Ardie surpasses Cully, Jonah and Tana as the best ever player for the Canes I would be surprised. Not saying it would be a bad thing at all, just surprised.

How can you think my statement of them dueling it out for an All Black spot is a Hyperbole?? Cane is the incumbent and he is in the leadership group, but he doesn't own the jersey. To think he did would be pure stupidity. Isn't that what makes the All Blacks so great?? Players pushing the incumbents for positions is what creates competition and forces both players to perform at their peak with fear of losing their spot to the player next in line.

Same goes for a player like Keiran Read. I don't think hes played anywhere near his best in the last year, however I guess he hasn't needed to as there hasn't really been a strong enough candidate to push him to his playing limit.

I actually take back my comment on the greatest Hurricane but I would say he has a great chance of being our best forward ever. Cant go past Cully as being our greatest player, that guy was a machine.
-

Don't think there is as much of a gulf between the two in terms of form and class as some suggest. Cane is number one no doubt due to his experience and performances in black. However that has no relation to Savea. Just means he was on the scene earlier and took his opporutunities well. I have no doubt that if cane and todd werent around that Ardie would have been mccaws back up for the last season or two. The ABs management have rated him for a long time.

Don't really agree with the calls that Savea's qualities won't translate to tests. Going hard trucking up the ball in traffic, good breakdown work, good defence and skills and pace in the open is exactly what i want from an AB 7. Completely different player to say Adam Thompson who was great in the open but suffered in contact.

Regardless im glad we have them both and would much rather Cane and Savea to poopah, who people around the world have been raving about for ages now. Having Cane and Ardie together is almost like Mccaw 2.0 and Jones 2.0 (in playing style not just skin colour)

Yeah, Cane is clearly superior right now to Savea. Sevens or not, Cane should be starting against Wales.

However, I have been surprised if people have watched Savea and don't think he would become a quality test #7. He makes a lot of carries, tackles heaps, is always in support and gets plenty of turnovers. I don't know what areas of his game Savea needs to work on. He is a far better option than Todd and Shane Christie is probably still ahead of Blake Gibson for mine.
-

Does anyone know if Savea has a clause for Sevens. Like if he gets picked for the All Blacks can he choose to play for them or is he fully committed to Sevens??

Personally id rather see him stay and play 15s.
-

you'd think as a 20yr old, the shot at an Olympic Gold medal will be a huge draw card for him, especially knowing he is unlikely first pick for the ABs 7 jersey, I honestly don't think this will impact his AB career.

I fucken loved Jonah as much as the next man but he's no where near the Canes best player.....well I mean no one better has worn number 11 but Jonahs best Super Rugby was for the Blues and Chiefs.
-

My understanding is Savea is fully committed to 7s. He's due back to 7s in the beginning of May, with tournaments in Paris (13-15 May) and London (21-22 May) and so I don't think will factor in the ABs selection thinking for the June test series. If fit, i'd say he's near a lock for the Rio squad.
-

I honestly don't think the All Blacks this year will skip a beat. Many pundits (mostly overseas) have suggested that the departure of so much experience would hit them hard, but it looks like instead we will get a rejuvenated squad that will be able to stamp a fresh mark.

slight tangent: My main concern is the midfield and the cohesion of the 10/12/13. We have the players and several very good options in all three positions, but there will be questions about how they come together and build a combination.

We saw on that 2013 EOYT against France, Ireland and England that we had some scratchy performances when the coaches went with Ben Smith at centre. I won't have an issue with whoever they go with - Fekitoa, Crotty, or possible newbies like Ngatai, etc but I anticipate we may be up for some more scratchy performances.
-
Cane is a great player and is an absolute lock as no. 7 right now. But if Ardie keeps on developing like this, Cane will have to reach McCaw like brilliance to keep that jersey. Ardie's skillset is ridiculous.

Whatever the case, this game should be a cracker. Can't wait. -

just to go off on a complete tangent I'd love to see Ardie have a run in the boot... he's got all the skills

if there's one guy that needs a bit of pressure on him it's Reado.. he's struggled to recapture his form of a few years back and we're still lacking a quality backup 8

Then we could have Cane and Ardie on the paddock at the same time and we'd all be happy - until we found the next irrelevant thing to be unhappy about..
-

Probably because these bits don't work together. You were talking it up as a 1 vs 1 fight for the spot when in reality, Cane doesn't have to prove shit, that spot's already his. Ardie's the one who has to win it off him.

Personally, I think Ardie would be better off trying to get on the bench.

Luatua and Dixon putting their hands up I reckon to try and get a run at no.8.

Read was huge for us against the Jags. Starting to regain some of the old magic
-

Cane is definitely the number one 7 for the ABs, but I personally think Ardie is the form forward in the competition. I think he's doing everything a top 7 is meant to do, but is adding some bonus bits on top of it. Like Dane Coles at hooker, he is doing some things not too familiar for his position, which I think could make it appear like he's a flash player that is tailor made just for Super Rugby, but I don't think that's the case. From what I've seen, there isn't anything obvious to me that suggests he can't be a decent Test player - he does everything required of his position, is a pretty good decision maker and is a low error player, despite his high involvement on attack.

When he first hit the scene, size and physicality was the biggest problem for him, but he's made huge strides in that area since then and actually seems to play bigger than he looks.
-

The midfield next year of A Savea and A Ioane will go well for quite a few years. -

I got that but even in the video C4L posted, he wasn't 20 either. It was from last season, so he was 21.
-
