Strong side: Harsh on Laumape and Abbott to miss the squad all together. Shows the depth Boyd and Plumtree have grown though when you consider Nonu, Smith, Thrush and Franks left last year and Nehe/Broadhurst are injured.
 
I hope the Chiefs carry on their hoodoo at the ground. They've lost 9 out of the last 10 games at Westpac. Keep it up please.

I think Abbott left the field injured last week, not too long after he'd come off the bench. He only played 13 minutes.

Good to see that Andrew Horrell is back from injury and in the 23. It has been a long wait for him. I hope he'll get some decent game time.
Even better is that all 4 other Magpies at the Chiefs are starting!
 
Just wondering: TKB has been named on the bench and Weber has been starting in - I think - all but one games since TKB's return from injury. Is this a sign than Weber is overtaking TKB in the half back rankings? Should TKB be concerned about his AB spot?

Seeing as Latimer would regularly get starts ahead of Cane, I'm not sure why you'd think it'd have any impact on the ABs. It's not like TKB has had a bad season, he just picked up a concussion and Weber's been playing well.
 
Anyway, the fuck's Marshall doing starting? Dude can't throw lineouts for shit and isn't that the reason he dropped De Malmanche back in 2011/12? And he offered a hell of a lot more in scrums and around the field than Marshall.
 
Otherwise, that's a good 23. Looking forward to this game.

Listening to Rennie on the radio this morning, I suspect it is more how they want to play or horses for courses type decision...he reckons TKB is the best defensive 9 in the game

No. Unsure why he does not even make the reserves. But the coaches seem to rate Aso and he's more suited to 2nd

Didn't he just come back from injury? Bird has had a heap of injuries in his career.

Plumtree and Boyd have, largely, stuck with the side that beat the Rebels 38-13 last Friday. First-choice lock Blade Thomson returns to partner Michael Fatialofa, having sat that match out with a bit of knee bruising.
 
Beyond that, the most notable aspect of the squad was probably the retention of Matt Proctor and Vince Aso in midfield.
"We liked what they brought to the party last week and we're just looking forward to growing that partnership and seeing how it goes," Plumtree said of the combination at centre and second five-eighth.
 
"There's still pressure from Willis [Halaholo] and Ngani [Laumape], which is exactly what we want."
Halaholo gets the nod in the reserves, where James Marshall is also among the cavalry. Getting through Thursday's practise session was the last of the concussion protocols Marshall had to meet, having taken a head knock in the team's win over the Southern Kings on March 25.

Crucial

This should be a cracker. I have to be out of town so won't be going to the match and may even be lucky to see it live on TV which has me a bit pissed off.
 
Hopefully the Canes show the rubbish defensive patterns they did against the Jaguares. The Jags found it fairly easy to get through them after a few phases but their own poor finishing and decision making (along with good scrambling by the Canes) meant that they didn't profit as much as they could have. If the Canes play the same way against the Chiefs the scoreboard will tick over.
 
This has the potential to become a tit-for-tat try fest or a defensive slug out.
 
BB will be aiming at ACs channel while AC will be looking to run put flat balls against the Canes midfield.
