RWC Week 1: France v All Blacks

Captaincy seems to be an issue no matter who is captain.
Another brainless decision. You don't select Ardie to be your captain when he has won nothing as a captain. The obvious picks would be Whitelock and Barrett who are SR winning captains, Whitelock would be my preferred choice due to his seniority.

@KiwiMurph exactly my point. France essentially did the same to us. Mistake after mistake, maybe should have gone for the try instead of a kick for goal but France really didn't play anything from inside their own half.

We also used to be famous for 10 man rugby.

@Crazy-Horse but in the past 20 years or so we have been sucked into the illusion that good rugby is only scoring tries, and been pretty successful at it meaning we seem to have largely lost the ability to grind wins...no way could we have done what England did today, we'd have been pushing for tries all day.

Super rugby success as a captain doesn't automatically translate to being a successful test captain. I'm non-plussed over Ardie or Sam or Scooter, but Sam had big losses to France and Ireland on one tour, and Scooter has a card habit.
I really don't think the result would have been different if one of those two, who let's not forget were both on the field as senior players, were captain.

I really don't think the result would have been different if one of those two, who let's not forget were both on the field as senior players, were captain.
the only way the result changes is if you have a captain who is prepared to completely disregard what the coach just told them to do.

I can’t believe people are blaming the injuries or the officials, when let’s be honest the key reason the All Blacks lost this game and lost it by a big margin is that they played really, really badly.
If you are blaming the ref, missing players or the boogie, you are really clutching at straws for an awful performance.

The French were bloody lucky to win that.
Their try after half time relied on a number of fortuitous events, including Jaco missing a relieving knock on.
The yellow had a much more subtle impact than the obvious. Not sure if it was some perception of guilt for not giving red or what, but for the next 15 minutes or so Jaco has hyper tough on us at breakdown and anything which was dropped assumed forwards. Meanwhile, counted him twice not pinging for same thing in their half and one heinous offside, which even ITV picked up, which was very kickable.
An even handed display in those 15 minutes and it'd have been 19-16 or even 16 all with ten to play.
That was the game in a nutshell.
ABs did many good things and were best team over first three quarters.
I expect French coaches will have lots of material for Monday review.

Our set piece was embarrassing, we kicked aimlessly again, and we had no punch in attack. France were could easily have scored 2 more tries if they were less careless with the ball close to the line.
I’m not saying we are out of this cup, heck we just need to show up for the QF and then scrape past Australia (yay for being on the other side now and avoiding the 70m drop-goal machine that is England), and we are in the bloody final!
But we got well and truly beaten in this game.

EDG gave away two scrum penalties, but Antonio ought to have been penalised in run up to their first try and they lost a lineout on our 5m mark which many days would have resulted in turnover.
The set piece was OK.
At 62 they'd thrown everything at us and failed to improve the 16 - 13 score. On UK feed the French coaches were clearly concerned.
What we got schooled in was decision making, in particular when to kick and in which parts of field to play.
The two AB tries may have involved bounces, but both required excellent vision and execution over long distance to free the edge man in overlap.
When I started rewatch of second my attitude was same as yours, but unexpectedly there was a lot of good by ABs.
Trouble was we retain a tendency to overplay when we don't need to allowing French sat back and punished our mistakes.
That is the lesson which I hope the TWM and AB backs learn from this.
