I'm a bit torn about the result at Old Trafford.

The Australian in me is mightily relieved. Relieved we retain the urn, but mainly relieved we aren't subject to a historic 3-2 England win and the ensuing parades, OBEs, tribute documentaries etc. I mean can you imagine the insufferable carry-on? They'd be frothing about it for decades. So bullet dodged there.

But the cricket fan in me is sad. I've never seen a 2-2 Ashes series coming into the 5th Test, and I might never see it. It would have been electric.

There is still a lot to play for at the Oval though. Big difference between 3-1 and 2-2.

I was amazed to see that Sam Curran is an MBE. As is Adil Rashid. Not that they hand them out to just any old cricketer.

Shane Warne's epic sledge at Paul Collingwood comes to mind

"didn't you get an OBE? For scoring 5 at The Oval? That's embarrassing"

If they pulled off 3-2 they'd have the Ben Stokes statue erected within 24 hours.

And fair enough too, I might add.

Team award. For winning one of the limited over world cups. I've got no problem with that.

Don't think it was a team award - for Curran it was for the T20 World Cup that I can barely remember.

@KiwiPie Yeah you're right, though it turns out there were a few of that T20 side that got either the MBE or OBE in 2022/23, so I assumed...

I'm a cricket snob so giving out any lifetime awards for hit and giggle cricket seems very odd.

He's the greatest English fast bowler, but you can't make a serious case he's the overall greatest.

Averages 34 in Australia and South Africa, 29 in India. Not really close to Walsh, Ambrose, McGrath, Steyn, Akram, etc etc etc

Great longevity. Economy Rate. Sense of occasion and has got better with age.

Better than Statham, Tyson, Trueman, Larwood? Very debatable.

Bob Willis and John Snow say hi too.

I would put Anderson ahead of both of those two @MN5

Willis was a very honest toiler. Snow was a poor mans Shane Bond. Career curtailed by injury.

Fit (rather than fat) Botham would beat Jimmy too

I’ve just had another think, to be fair he’d be better than any Indian, Bangladesh or Sri Lankan fast bowler to play the game.

Andersons longevity is extraordinary though I’ll certainly give him that. He also improved with age very noticeably too.
