Smith is one of the game's deep thinkers, and clearly loves NZ rugby. The extraordinary turnaround job he did with the BFs shows he's lost none of his ability. Excellent to have him on board.

I see no reason to be prickly about this. Wayne has been associated with success for NZR like no other person. He's clearly a cut above.

Anyone who gets prickly about Wayne Smith being involved with the AB's is a bloody moron IMHO.

    Or a porcupine

I'd say the vast majority here are simply in the anyone but Foster camp. The same will apply to Razor if he has the same lack of success.

I don't think your 2nd sentence is true at all. Winning clearly matters, and it enables you to look past heaps of faults. Losing sucks, and is not well tolerated by the AB fans, this forum being no exception.

However, the most frustrating thing about Foster is the lack of ambition and the lack of accountability. Doing the same shit over and over, and telling us that it's so close to clicking. Telling us he would address physicality then doing nothing of the sort. Selecting the same tired folk in the same positions, ignoring things that were staring the rest of us in the face until his hand was forced.

I can't see Razor doing any of these things in his stint as HC. He will be innovative and unafraid to try new things. Hopefully he even shows some accountability for the things that don't work. Even if he doesn't have immediate success, I think that will earn him far more leeway from the average fan that what Foster has been afforded.

    I really hope you're right.

What's so difficult about it that it needs a dedicated coach? That sort of stuff should be Pro Rugby 101 like throwing into a lineout surely.

@Victor-Meldrew And yet it is consistantly poorly executed across the NZ teams.

Fair point. Sort of thing that NZR should be leading with at NPC & SR level I'd have thought.

Isn't it a culture rather than an execution thing? Our Super teams seem to want to play with the ball and that includes from kick offs.

Maybe (and I'm just spit balling) they have stats that show it's more advantageous to play with the ball even down their own end of the field, and that it doesn't often lead to tries to the opposition?

It's time for New Zealand Rugby to look offshore for Super coaches

It's time for New Zealand Rugby to look offshore for Super coaches

New Zealand rugby would open itself to an influx of new ideas if foreign coaches were on the agenda.

Yep but at high level a things need proper skills to execute real well. Kicking and catching high kicks are rugby 101, but still have skills coaches to enchance things. Same as lineouts everything, even passing is a thing that skills coaches work on.

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times

I have to wonder about Razors assistant selections with some of the evidence we are seeing in Super
Holland and his terrible sub calls and Rangi with his kicking tactics
Early touch from Perofeta in his own half and he puts the same short cross field bomb low percentage kick that we have seen BB doing. Obviously a coached thing and if it’s not directly coming from Rangi then he should be stopping it.
The subbing of Roigard at 60 for Booth continues. Roigards importance to the Canes at the moment is equal to Ardie. He’s not flagging fitness wise so keep him on.

Hopefully both Holland and McDonald are better assistants than they are HCs

If the Blues 'make the Super final, Leon will end up with the second best winning percentage of any Blues coach (currently tied with Sloan). He's already the "winningest".

Short memories of how poor they were before he took over.

There were similar kicks by the NZ 20s yesterday.

That isn't saying much. After GH, I'd say the Blues have been a study in futility. Leon doesn't seem to win the big ones when it matters

GH was the Blues GOAT. All the rest were pretty blah. Even Sloan's cup winning season was with GH as an advisor

@canefan have to assume they realise the difference between super and test and as such tactics are different, and Razor will be ultimately setting these

Henry's teams like 14/15 of starters were AB's, should've cakewalked the comp each year & to be fair they did, except for 1999.

Leon has improved the group's culture massively, that's the key thing he's contributed, but I'd argue he's still figuring out his best team, indecisive selections have inhibited the side from reaching their full potential since 2020, look at McMillan he knows his best team & seriously values cohesion, he would never have persisted with Plummer (2021) then RTS (2022) as his starting 12, he would've eased RTS in as a utility-sub & Heem would've been his starting 12 for the last 2 seasons since TJ Faiane's departure. McDonald lacks decisiveness with his selections and is prone to experimenting in key positions (lock, blindside, 10, 12, 15) where stability is required leading into crucial matches.
