    @Crucial

    Perfect Razor approached him so good move.

    Maybe Foster could have done with a mentor or maybe that was a lost cause.

    Where does the 'Razor approached him" bit come from or are you just joking?

    Schmidt was basically employed as Foster's mentor. This type of role just wasn't around so he was put in the direct staff.

    Smith will be across both ABs and BFs.

    @Crucial

    It comes from knowing it was going to happen and how.
    It was part of the coaching interview process
    Razor had him in a role, and NZR wanted to keep him involved with the Black ferns as well so it had to be worked through.
    A couple of us on the fern have given enough hints Smith was to be involved ever since Razor was appointed.

    So it was a mutual desire (Razor and NZR) and something being worked on anyway (for BFs). That's what I expected.
    I guess that if you want to spin it as Razor approached him, like it was all his great idea then fine.

    @Old-Samurai-Jack yep, I couldnt give a rats if Razor approached Smith or if NZR told Razor he had Smith as his mentor, either way, it's a win!

    @Crucial You sound a bit butthurt that Razor got the head coach gig with all your comments about him in this thread since his appointment. Razor knows Smith well. Why is it so hard for you to believe that Razor asked for him to be in that role? Who knows; maybe that's where it started, and NZR decided to extend that role to the Black Ferns. Does it really matter?

    Not butthurt at all. I truly hope he does a good job.
    I commented on a comment that had no verified support.
    What I have always done is try to temper the 'Razor is the Saviour and walks on water' stuff.
    Give the bloke a chance to see how he goes in international rugby. It is a different world to planning and executing a long comp, the tolerances for accepted performances are much much less and the problems that NZ rugby have are much more than having a fat guy in charge.
    If Razor and Smith worked this out and approached NZR then great. I just haven't seen any evidence of that backed up.
    Given the amount of people that claim they know exactly what has been said and done between coaches and employers on this thread there must be one hell of grapevine and a lot of loose lips in Canterbury.

    @Crucial I don't belong to the "Razor is the Saviour" group, but to me you sound overly negative. If Razor doesn't get the results; people will moan, because people moan a lot, not the least on the Fern. That would happen regardless of who was appointed. I can understand the excitement about Razor's appointment though, because he's been highly successful thus far, things haven't gone well the previous years and people just want to have hope that the ABs will get back to their best. Razor is different from other candidates, because he's younger, radiates energy and sounds like someone who'll come in with fresh ideas and methods. I don't think that excitement needs to be tempered on here. I think most Ferners are realistic enough to know that Razor can't change water into wine.

    I think there are one or two people in this group but if anyone says anything positive about the Razor appointment, this old tired line gets trotted out. It is as meaningless as saying "the world is round" cos it is common sense to 99% of us.

    The comment is only made when people fail to acknowledge the difference of the challenge, the difference of the organisation (Crusaders v NZR) and associated politics, and bite back when these things are raised.
    I totally get that he can be seen as an exciting possibility but I have seen too much over the years with both players and coaches where Cantab success does not translate to AB success and the rhetoric stays the same.
    I really do hope that it doesn't turn out that his success doesn't translate, but I'm not blind to the possibility.
    If you look back, NZR aren't blind to that as well and have taken a previous approach of " success in one comp isn't enough. Come back and convince us that you can translate that to the international stage".
    To Razor's credit he has done that and provided a convincing plan.

    you know, given the chat on here, and the constant appointments, it appears we have only had one decent coach come out of NZ in the last 20 years

    If you look back on threads a couple of us posted Wayne Smith would be involved in Razor's coaching group straight after he was appointed.
    You believe what you like about how we knew that but we aren't going to bleat how we knew all over hear to piss off the people who told us.

    I don't care what you believe to be honest, Smith is added to Razors group as we Said it would happen and everyone is better off for it I think, and that is all that matters to us AB fans.

    Cool, following precedent set with the Chiefs, now I can attribute all of Razors success to Smithy. 🙂

    I'd say the vast majority here are simply in the anyone but Foster camp. The same will apply to Razor if he has the same lack of success.
