Just few good games won't get him thereI was questioning the fact you had him at 8th. Look, if they don't pick Roigard this year, I get it. Other, more experienced halfbacks are also playing really well atm, but to me Roigard looks like a player suited to test rugby. His kicking is sound, his pass is fast and accurate, he makes smart choices and he's a consistent game driver.

I don't think that at test level they use it much more than Smith. I don't know if that is because of the increased risk of being turned over or because of gameplan. All three can snipe but not to the level of Fakatava. Roigard and Ratima do their running when on the front foot more like an inside back than a halfback 'snipe'

Not to say that by season end he won't be firing on all cylinders. though.
If he is then there will be some real decisions to be made.
One thing about Smith, Christie and Weber is that they are from a similar mould. Smaller, fast, but don't have a line crack that often.
Fakatava offers difference in that you can never give him a tiny space because he might have you backpedalling. Probably a bit more robust in contact as well. Roigard and Ratima sit somewhere between the two. Both have an eye for a chance.
As a selector do you want like for like replacements to keep gameplans consistent or do you want to mix things up?of course, i just feel he might have to prove himself even more than some of the others of overcome any doubts people having in his fitness, they might opt for less potential for less risk of injury

Fakatava on defence has been compared to a 4th backrower. There's no other halfback in NZ like him who can make turnovers/jackals like he does; only Perenara comes close in that respect. IIRC Fakatava started learning that already at Hastings Boys' by training with the loosies.

i wouldn't mind if we were brave with our 3rd in various positions. first choices is the best, second choice is the safe one...3rd i feel can be something new or different, filling the squad completely with options we consider safe just because they have experience at international level doesn't excite me

@Kiwiwomble guess alot will depend on what Fozzie sees as his best way to win the rwc...rookie debutant or safe experience.

@taniwharugby of course, i just dont blindly fall into the camp of experience trumps all, experience where they havent played well or got beat aint inherently good, so my feeling is a bit of both, pick experience as first and second choice...but if there is a rookie hot on form then roll the dice

there is also the maverick quality of the other teams not having too much "Tape" on your bolter players. a small factor, but every little helps.
Inject a bit of fresh blood in to give everyone a lift. Especially at scrum half and back three. Its stale.
