I think this is quite opportunistic of RA and good on them for acting decisively.

If Jones wasnt sacked by England then I am sure Rennie would have taken them through to the world cup. Now that Jones was available early, they probably thought they had to seize the moment.

As for Rennie, He knew it was a very tough job when he signed on and having a win rate of 38% always leaves a head coach vulnerable.

I usually avoid Treason's articles but decided to read this one. He's not wrong about McLennan.

In contrast, McLennan sells people’s souls, providing the price is right. McLennan said in one of the first interviews he gave after the sacking of Rennie: “There’s more of a risk not doing something about it when the opportunity presented itself.

“We stumbled during the spring tour. The world changed when Eddie got let go. The team has made progress but we need to develop a harder edge. There’s no more experienced campaigner out there than Eddie. We had to take advantage of that. He’s ruthless and tough and has that twinkle in his eye. The profile of rugby has gone through the roof already and fans, sponsors and players will react accordingly.”
That last sentence tells you all you need to know about McLennan. He sees Jones as a marketing coup. He sees Jones as a tap dancer with twinkle eyes and twinkle toes and a good line in patter. If you want sponsors, then Eddie’s your man. And there’s nothing McLennan likes more than a good sponsor.

As i get older, i find more and more comfort in history repeating itself.

My fashionable wife has informed me that superb look for chicks from the 90s of cargo pants and a crop top (best modelled by Gwen Stefani) is on the comeback. With a bit of luck chokers and landing strips are next.

Eddie Jones is once again the coach of the Wallabies, and Rugby Australia is looking to spunk eye-watering amounts of money on backs from Rugby League.

Pommy guy at work was saying he still knows people in the pro ranks back home, who can't praise Eddie enough. Don't believe the beat up about him being unpopular, or words to that effect.

But said work mate, who is a junior coach here now, is conflicted:

On one hand, Jones will help boost Rugby here and get people interested again. That's handy when you're involved in the game.

On the other, the match up against England at RWC has him very nervous...

What match up? If Oz beat Wales they probably wouldnt face England unless both made the final.
If Oz don't beat Wales then they are a lost cause against England

Fine. The possibility of a match up.

I might be wrong, but the issue is not necessarily that his popularity amongst his players and peers wanes over time, it's that his ability to get the best out of them on the pitch does. So, while he might still be popular with players and people in English rugby circles, he hasn't been able to get the best out of them nearly 4 years now. It was the same last time around with the Wallabies. There was no issue around player disharmony - it was all to do with waning results on the pitch and his inability / refusal to develop a functional tight 5.

    Treason is the stopped clock.

The l in that sentence appears to be redundant.
I don't care if he is infrequently right, there is something very bitter about that man.

Right so Eddie is earning is his coin - already talking about targeting some league players for next year and getting in the public eye.

League boss Peter V'landys has responded:

    Notable quotes:

But V’landys said any player who does cross codes “can take their mobile phone with them on the field because they’ve got 20 minutes to tweet, Instagram or TikTok” in a dig at the ball-in-play time disparities between the two codes.

    Actually that's pretty good 🙂

“We wish Eddie the best of luck, and I hope he’s got his mobile phone with him so he can fill that 30 minutes as well,” the Australian Rugby League Commission chair told AAP.

“I’m not concerned, because why would you want to leave the greatest game of all for another game,” V’landys told AAP.

“There is more to it than money. There is also enjoyment and the quality.

“We’ve got the greatest game of all …. people will always want to play the greatest game of all.”

Unsure why he's targeting Nelson Asofa-Solomona though. Seems an outside bet to have a go at NZers.

He's a prop from NZ who plays for the Storm. When the Tongans defected in 2017 he was the most outspoken against them.

Also, how have you never heard of him? He's likely been discussed on the rugby threads as he comes from a rugby background (well, he is a NZer).

Edit: Apparently he had a meeting with Rennie a couple of years ago.

@Nepia I thought he was what brought c4l here and it was pretty much all he talked about for a year or two, until he became just your slightly above average league player.
