@antipodean lol what planet are you on? There were multiple occasions last night where we had the Irish back pedalling after two or three phases and then Beauden or Smith frustratingly put boot to ball.
It’s pretty much the main thing they touched on post match, we just aimlessly gave possession away to the Irish all night, and we paid the price.
I'm firmly grounded on planet earth where getting our backs to use their individual talent to simply score tries isn't a realistic option.

I actually think you are both right.
Aimless kicking after a few phases which gifts the ball to the opposition and too much going wide when we haven't sucked in the defence and expecting individual genius to win the day.
It's poor game control or tactics - or both.

Great teams like the Crusaders in recent years and the ABs in years gone by have been able to break down their opposition by building phases and stretching teams to the edges with their superior skillset, even from inside their own half.
All Black sides have been scoring tries from inside their own half for years by backing their ability to beat their opposition man on man.
The fact that you think running it from inside your own half is strategically dumb makes me think you’ve only just started watching rugby in the last few years OR you’re a Pom and you grew up watching Wilkinson.
Have the ABs really become that limited in our game plan that building pressure from inside our own half is a bad move? Well then, I’m not surprised we are losing on a regular with that mindset.

I haven't defended Foster's selections, coaching or tactics. But keep thinking "just run it" is a solution against tier one nations now.
"Can't run as fast because heavier" is looking like genuine insight compared to you.

@antipodean I’m not saying ‘just run it’ from anywhere, I’m saying we need to chance our arm more than we are now and actually back our players to exert dominance through a superior skillset, because fuck me we have the players to do it.
I get that kicking is a way of tactically getting through and over modern day defensive lines but when we get well over the advantage line (even from inside our own half) and we have the opposition back pedalling, surely it’s best to keep ball in hand, no?
Something that Mo’unga has in spades over Beauden is the ability to read when to kick vs when to run no matter where his team is on the park.
As an AB fan, I just think kicking is ingrained into our game atm and I feel like we aren’t always making the right decisisons when we have the opposition under the pump.

Waking up today and thinking over the match again, as well as reading some of the comments from Foster and the players, has made me go from being angry to simply depressed. I am depressed mainly because this team is so clearly performing below their obvious abilities.
I am a little bit sick of hearing or reading people say we just don't have the cattle any more. It's right, we don't have 2005 to 2016 quality and depth that we got used to. But we do have:
- Two of the best 3 AB locks of all time, one who has played 130-odd tests and the other who has played nearly 100 tests and at one point was the World Rugby Player of the Year.
- Absolutely ridiculous depth in our loose forwards that should be the envy of practically every other team in the World.
- A 100-plus test halfback, the greatest in AB history, at various times of the last 10 years the best halfback in the world, and one of the greatest passes of all time
- Stupidly talented 10s, one of whom is a 100-test veteran and 2x World Rugby Player of the Year, while the other is 6x Super Rugby title winner.
- Absolutely ridiculous depth in our midfield that should be the envy of practically every other team in the World.
- As is usual, a multitude of back 3 options all of which are seriously potent attacking threats (and in Jordan, close to the most exciting young talent in world rugby right now).
And so what I find so depressing is that we have a coaching team that can't put together a game plan to get consistent performances out of that collection of obvious talent. Now, clearly our tight 5 is gash - hence why I haven't mentioned it - but that's most of my point: a decent coaching team would find a way to maximise the above strengths while minimising the weaknesses. Our coaching team does neither and its farking depressing

Well the only dedicated players are FR from what I understand. As far as I'm aware it's well beyond the officials' remit to tell coaches what position other players should be in. If it is I'm definitely becoming a ref.

as it always seems a loosie goes off, I assumed it was a rule whereby a forward had to leave.
The rule re Ardie not being allowed back on sucked though, even as a sub (as I assume they sent PGS on as they were not allowed to send Ardie back)
