I disagree. R-S has been in excellent form all year and deservedly was both our (Hawke's Bay's) player and forward of the year. The Magpies' scrum has been so good, this season, in large part because of him

You could also say this about Numia though. And I though the two teams scrums were fairly even in the 2 games

But I just want a competitive Canes scrum (it was a joy to watch wellington match Canterbury and smash them in one scrum) and don't really care as long as they are good enough

@Canes4life Rakete-Stones was first choice LH, last year, until he got injured. He'll definitely be ahead of Numia.

Numia was the 1st choice. But his form wasn't good (Unlike this NPC). So R-S became first choice. But we have luckily 3 good options here (inc Mafileo) and we will likely need all 3

6 is the interesting 1. Tyler esp if he's fully fit. But also Howden, Tyler L, Flander (who needs to step up next year), Delany and most likely Prinsep will battle it out. Alos the back-up to Ardie. Lakai must be in the running even though I would normally agree with your comment on this. But mayve start of the bench to begin to cover esp 8 and 7

If Savea starts at 8 I think the 6 jersey is a three horse race between Delany, Flanders and Howden. I’d go Delany because he’s massively stepped up in some big games this year and is massive for our lineout.

Again, if Savea starts at 8 I’d have Flanders and Lakai off the bench with Delany covering lock from 6.

What about TL? I haven't seen much of him but was super impressed the little I saw

He’s not a 6, he’s an 8 who can probably cover 6 if needed. He’s not as big as the other three.

He 1.94 and 104kg last year. And young too so should bulk up. like Delany well (1.94 and 95kg) as per the Canes website. If Delany does bulk up without losing anything he will be for sure a possible starter

Lol he’s way bigger than 95kg. I was talking to Halford who is an assistant coach to the Lions but also doubles up as the Eastbourne Under 85kg assistant coach and he said Delany has bulked up around that 115kg mark which is more than big enough for a Super level 6.

He was bulked up a lot but 115k??? From 95kg at the start of SRP. But he certainly has bulked up though. I hope it is this much.

@Winger he wasn’t 95kg at the start of Super Rugby. Those stats are horribly wrong. Apparently he ranges between 113-115 which is why the Canes also see him as lock cover.

If Jordie starts at 12, Moorby starting at fullback.

Love will push hard for that fullback spot given his form the last few months.

Definitely, and his kicking is superior to Moorbys.

@Stargazer sheesh I wouldn’t say PRS is a definite starter. From where I’ve been sitting over the last couple months Numia is ahead of Rakete-Stones on form. He’s come of age this year and deserves to start after being the best for the Lions. I’d also have Mafileo over PRS but it’s fairly even between the three.

I disagree. R-S has been in excellent form all year and deservedly was both our (Hawke's Bay's) player and forward of the year. The Magpies' scrum has been so good, this season, in large part because of him. During SRP, he was picked ahead of Numia for a good reason. Based on NPC form, that shouldn't change. They'll probably be rotated, but if you play against a strong scrummaging team, you pick R-S or Mafileo, not Numia.

Lakai is already arguably one of our best. If he’s good enough already why not start him? Also, who doesn’t want to see an Ardie/Lakai combo.

My point about Lakai has nothing to do with form or skills, and everything with his physiological development. At his age, his body isn't ready for top level rugby week in, week out. Throwing him into a 1st XV Super squad too soon, is just really bad for his body.

Numia won the scrum battle against an All Black XV last week and you could argue he did the same against the Magpies in both clashes this year. Numia is at an age where he is probably starting to come into his own and it has really shown lately. He’s been excellent in all facets.

Let’s just agree to disagree on this one. They both won player of the year for their respective provinces. What we should be doing is celebrating the fact we actually have talent in our propping department for once. Whoever puts their hand up in the Canes environment will get the starting jersey. Whoever that is I’m hoping they do they business.

I keep saying Stargazer, any player that is a coach's pet is usually that for one reason. The coach thinks he is best for the job. I was the same when I coached, I had favourite players, the were always the ones who trained wll and I thought played the best. You know why they my favourites, they made me look good as a coach!

I think Love will be the No1 fullback, and share role with Moorby and Jordie

Not too much to be fair. He’s an HB lad who was very solid in his appearances last year from memory.

@Winger This sums it up quite nicely:

    Jacob Devery - Wikipedia

He was unfortunate to get a really bad leg injury when at the Canes earlier this year that kept him from playing NPC (he had surgery; it may have been his knee). Not as powerful as Aumua or Thompson, but usually very reliable in his line-out throwing.. He did a good job replacing Ash Dixon at the end of the 2021 NPC season (Kereru-Symes was injured for most of the 2021 season).

For Crowley to specifically mention him after the NPC final about his omission from the AB XV says a lot. He will end up being the best defensive centre in NZ and if that’s the ingredient for success (just like his bro in 2016) then so be it. We’ve had plenty of attacking centres in the past and we’ve won nothing. Proctor is starting to find his feet on attack aswell which is a bonus even though he will never light it up like some others.

Comments from coach Holland on all the selections. Peter Umaga-Jensen is having shoulder surgery so will be out for the first half of the campaign.

Sullivan has rapid pace so you can't leave him out of the starting XV, use him out wide, where he's most dangerous.

    TJ, Love 10, Rayasi 11, Barrett 12, Proctor 13, Sullivan 14, PUJ 15 - why not.

    Roigard, Higgins, Naholo.

Too much talent to cram into one 23, it's almost unfair...

So the Canes have Cameron but not Garden-Bachop who has been the best 1st Five of the third part of the NPC. I guess the latter will head overseas.

JGB has been terrible, and only came good once the Canes decided to not re-sign him.
But at Super level he has always looked pretty bad, despite plenty of chances.

First half of the NPC Morgan was superior, I think Morgan only went downhill after he was benched, maybe he lost confidence.

@cgrant JGB looks to be moving to Japan according to the Stuff article.

Moving on: Scott Scrafton (Italy), Jackson Garden-Bachop (Japan), Pepesana Patafilo (Crusaders), Wes Goosen (Scotland).

JGB was inconsistent. Looked the goods at times but then next game would be poorish. I think Brett Cameron could be the first 1st5 to start. And if the AB aren't available in the first few weeks we could see Higgins and Proctor team up in midfield

A starting backline (if PUJ and Jordie aren't available) might be Perenara Cameron Higgins Proctor Savea on one wing and lots of options for the other wing (including Moorby and Sullivan). Maybe Love at FB. It will be a good backline even without Jordie. As long as one of Cameron or Morgan step up at 1st. Otherwise this could be a weakness. We also need another wing to put their hands up. Offers something on attack but good defenders too. Savea has been surprising good since his return and will likely be on one wing.

But Im assuming the regular starting ABs might not be available to kick SRP off in Aust (hopefully they are for the NZ clashes). Otherwise Jordie will replace Higgins.

Canes should have an improved team next year. But hopefully the team isn't smashed with injuries like this year (esp at hooker). Maybe the Canes should talk to the Wellington conditioning person.
