Robbie Deans to potentially replace Joseph

<p>I don't think Deans fits that at all. By all accounts he is a "my way or the highway" type of coach.</p> -
<p>I think Roger Clark and the Highlanders will be very careful about outlining the role they want their head coach to have. Joseph had to adapt following a number of years of my way or the highway, with a key ingredient in that being trusting his coaching team more. I'm sure the Highlanders will be making sure the candidates understand what will be expected of them.</p>

<p>The thing about Deans is that he is an amazing recruiter of young players. If the Highlanders get him expect them to develop into the best squad in the competition within 2 to 3 years and the other kiwi franchises scratching their hands wondering what happened to their star players they had coming through. This leagacy will last for a good 5-10 years after he moves on as well. The Crusaders are still benefiting from Sam Whitelock Kieran Read.</p>

<p>This is the biggest difference between the Crusaders under Blackadder. Todd believes that BS about a champion team beating a team of champions. Deans always knew that a team of champions playing like a champion team was the way to go.</p> -

<p>If Deans returned you wouldn't see the Blues hogging 3 quality 6s in Kaino, Luatua and Akira Ioane while the Crusaders lack ball runner to bend the line with Jordan Taufua starting when he should be the bench/impact player.</p>

<p>Doubt Blake Gibson would be on the Blues roster either TBH. Doubt Otere Black would be wasting his time on the hurricanes bench either.</p>

<p>As much as Hansen may not like to admit it with Deans back at the Crusaders the All Blacks would have a much wider pool of talent developed up to Super rugby level quicker.</p> -

<p>I agree Robbie did a better job of recruitment than Toddy but i'm not sure about team of champions stuff - when I think of Crusaders under Deans I think of very consistent players who know their roles and were a well balanced side. Guys like Casey Laulala were wonderful for the Crusaders but didn't translate to international stardom.</p>

<p>Some of those examples are a bit off - Blake Gibson is an Auckland boy through and through and is getting starting game time. Otere Black looks a fine prospect but Mo'unga is a good prospect himself and has guided Canterbury to an ITM Cup title as a 10 in his own right. </p>

<p>Also Super Rugby has transitioned a lot since Dean's day - Deans was mostly Super 12 with Super 14 coming in during Deans' final three years. The current format is a much different beast. </p> -

Revisionism taken to its most absurd levels. The Crusaders under Deans hogged players in all sorts of positions. This strategy only failed when he pissed players off and they left.<br>

As for your final point, it's pure conjecture. Super rugby as has been pointed out has changed a lot and Deans has been out of it for a looong time.<br>

No issues at all with Dean's coaching record at the Crusaders but there is a very long list of very good players that were a mainstay of his success that were with the franchise before he took over, including the following AB's<br>

Buy then it gets tricky if I think about which I'd prefer to win more this year, Joe Morgan Memorial Trophy, Rugby Championship or The Whatever The Fuck It Is Now Cup (NPC).<br>
Because the last time Northland won anything that wasn't a fucking kitchen utensil was maybe close to 20 years ago, I think I'd take the NPC win. ABs win the Rugby championship 9 times out of 10, and my club won the comp back to back in 2011/2012, so I could live with waiting another year to win that again.<br>
Oh how I dream of a golden era for the Taniwha. Alas, I fear when my son is old enough to listen to my stories of when we beat the star studded Vikings in the 2nd division final, he won't believe me - it'll just be too unbelievable that Northland could ever have won anything. -
For me it's ABs first, second and third. I get behind my Super and Domestic teams but when they lose I don't cry. When the ABs lose I have an emotional break down.

If it would guarantee AB success for all time I would be happy for the Canes, Wellington, 7s team, Black Caps, Olympic team and All Whites to never win a single thing again.

Is odd actually, I am more emotionally invested in Northland, so get more upset when they lose (I know right) but get over it cos, well....ABs I guess having the expectation and it being fulfilled brings complacency and if the ABs were losing more it'd start grating too. But then I guess I also actually attend more Northland games, I suppose if I was able to attend more AB games too, I still recall the walk from Twickers in 99...

I am supportive of the idea of Robbie Deans returning to coach in NZ. The poor quality of the sides coached by Cotter and Schmidt suggest to me they are a miles away from being good enough to coach the All Blacks. If Steve Hansen really is going to quit in 2017, then a wiser, older Robbie Deans could well be the best man to take over.
