@Machpants he does that for the Highlanders, and also better than anyone at picking his target and getting it to them in traffic...but tbf it is often the non receivers that have to hold thier bottle and not reach for the pass that in some cases is right there.

It does sound promising. The fact that we could see the game plan get picked off years ago has frustrated the shite out of us fans for such a long time I think the average fan would be happy to see any form of innovation. Seeing the tactical nous and innovation of the respected top NZ SR sides and other top international sides rubs salt into that wound.
Even if the ABs win today, if it is done using the same old tired game plan, we know it is just a matter of time before the wheels fall again and it will be a long season. From this perspective, this game is incredibly important for the mental health of NZ fans.

There were some promising changes in the first test, but one of them that was most trumpetted, may have been made up on the night. When asked about Smith hitting the third receiver to get outside the initial Irish defence, which lead to Aridie's awesome second try, he said

"Actually it was just off the cuff. Just trying to see space and call where the space is and Nuggs just hit me there"

Now maybe this was just in that particular instance, but if not it is
a: a great sign for ABs on field problem solving
b: showing again Foster etc haven;t changed their plan

    I'm not sure which!

Actually if you heard Mooar spek after haftime when asked what they told the team, his reply, "very little, the players had the answers to the questions already".
I liked the sound of it.

So you're saying Ardie wasn't playing to pattern?

    @Bones

Barnes, along with Miles Harrison, forms the Harry and Marv of rugby journalists.

Think I will take more notice of Kieran Read, especially as he says what I ramble on about all the time, ie Cane is made for test rugby, the way he plays etc is what we need.

    I especially like

Knowing fully well from experience, Read said Cane has “definitely got a good shoulder, real heavy”, as evidenced by one particular big shot he put on on the weekend,

Poor Ofa, Cane taking all the credit because our commentators are shit, and our press look no further than what is easily found on google

@Machpants the only one in the press to pick up that Ofa was the one who made the tackle was SBW - who mentioned it about 5 times during the Stan coverage of the Wallaby game.

How embarassing for the rest than it was the genius SBW that picked it up

Is that why Ofa is so fast for a prop, or Cane slow for a loosie?

I'm pretty sure I saw Cane doing a hit that made a player spill the ball, UK commentary didn't even have a name until the replay. How was Ofa involved?

I went back and had a look - I can find the time stamp if need be - Cane was right next to Ofa and the Irish player fell towards Cane so at a glance I can see why it was attributed to Cane but it was Ofa's shoulder/hit/tackle that caused the spill.

Not to go full GAGR but see the below.

@KiwiMurph the one in my mind had Cane coming in from the side, on the tram lines. But most likely old man brain.

@KiwiMurph that makes it look like the jolting impact to force the turnover came from Cane with Ofas low tackle simply enabling that contact. So I really don't follow what people are saying in this thread. Or is it a different tackle? The Barnes article was just a click bait windup.

@ARHS if you watch in real time all the force comes from Ofa. Cane basically stands there and does a little jump.

    Ofa is a lightweight.

I'm not savvy enough to turn it into a gif but in the motion/video it's Ofa's hit that has all the impact.

I've gone into way too much detail already so I might as well keep going.

It looks like the ball comes out prior to Cane making any contact at all as Furlong carries into contact with his left arm/side and this is a still image from just before the image I posted above with Ofa making the hit and Cane between Ardie and Furlong (blocked by Irish 8 Doris) yet to make contact.
