Those props look picked for set piece vs Ireland.
Backs look a hell of a lot better.

Unavailable for selection due to injury - Joe Moody, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ethan Blackadder.
Unavailable for selection due to New Zealand Rugby return to play criteria - Patrick Tuipulotu, Damian McKenzie.
You’d have to say the first three would’ve made it - Moody over Karl T, ALB over LF, Blackadder over PGS.
But would PT and DMac have been certainties?
PT over Lord possibly. DMac over Perofeta?
DMac woud have been picked for sure, if he had a good season, him and beaudy in tandem was the answer to rush defences apparently.

PT no. DMac would depend on if he played super and how he went. Would be a massive selection battle between DMac and Perofeta.

On form I'd take Lord and Perofeta.

Fox delusional:
"You could think that there's something massively wrong with our game, but there's not. We've got to tweak some things."

Its an issue the Canes have now.

Is this the most average looking All Blacks team for a while? I feel like there are so many ??, not a good thing 1 year out from a World Cup.
Hang on. This is only a couple of selections away from what we all expected or would have selected. Jumping on the negative pretty quickly aren't you?
Fozzie's been bolder than me at halfback!!!

I like what he’s done at halfback. Christie has some work ons but I think there is more upside than Weber. They obviously like Fakatava’s speed to the ruck - biggest thing for him IMO is that he doesn’t have to make the big play or throw the no look pass all the time. Just play.
-
looking at those props (aside form Ofa) we are gonna need to start ST for his ball running, one of SW & BR will need to play 80, while workign extra hard....
-
So Big Karl plays maybe 2 hours all season, is leaving for Europe and Fozz the fuckwit still selects him. Fucking idiot.
-
@Daffy-Jaffy said in All Blacks 2022:
No DeGroot is he injured?
I'm pretty surprised too...
Maybe work rate is the question but I think he'll appear before the end of the season. -
-
Could put together a decent NZ A 23.
1 Hodgman
2 Eklund
3 Newell
4 Tuipulotu
5 Goodhue
6 Robinson
7 Harmon
8 Jacobson9 Weber
10 McKenzie
11 Telea
12 TUJ
13 Sullivan
14 Lam
15 Sullivan16 Aumua
17 Norris
18 Lomax
19 Strange
20 Mikaele-Tu'u
21 Perenara
22 Gatland
23 Ennor -
Getting closer to this backline;
AS, BB, CC, RTS, RI, SR, WJ
Good luck defending that.
-
@Mattasaurus his work rate is a heck of a lot higher than Karl T. Work rate has nothing to do with it. Foster is going to play a boring forwards game like last year. Props not getting involved at the breakdown and holding off. Bullshit gameplan. We will be get dominated once our locks get tired.
-
We’ve been calling for the selectors to be a bit more bold and it could’ve been quite easy to go back to Perenara and Weber but they’ve gone for two younger players.
Could’ve selected Ennor but they’re taking a punt on an ex-leaguie who’s played in all reality not a lot of footy.
I applaud that.
-
@Stargazer Lomax forgotten about.

My main quibble is PGS instead of someone like MMT.
-
So Schmidt has had no input into selections right? He doesn’t start until after the Ireland series?

There's not much to applaud there. Form was obvious in the selection of the halfbacks. And RTS has a higher upside than Ennor does, who hasn't made a case to be an outside back deserving of selection.
-
@Unite if they havent spoken to him and involved him in this process then they are morons.
He will have alot of IP on players and would know which types of players we will be best playing against certain players.

Good possibility that this will be the starting tight five:
1 Tu’inukuafe
2 Taylor
3 Laulala
4 Whitelock
5 RetallickNot great.
Big Karl's selection has blindsided me - so who knows. But, I was thinking:
Bower, Taylor, Laulala, Barrett and Retallick. Well, I'm hoping they pick Barrett to play 80 and use Retallick and Whitelock in tandem.
I'd quite like to see Ofa instead of Nepo - but, only if his scrumming vs de Groot was an aberration.
No need for the red card jokes.
-
I guess we will target Ireland for scrum penalties?

I still think MMT’s time will come. Big fan of his.
Put it down to more Chiefs bias 😎
-
@ACT-Crusader Plumtree's Taranaki bias.
-
Hodgeman/Robinson should feel a little hard done by, not sure what else they need to do, I hope this doesn't fuck with their heads before the weekend.
I would have preferred Sullivan over Havs as he has future written all over him whereas Havs at best is second rate cover. -
@Tim said in All Blacks 2022:

Ireland have a pretty weak scrum, we should dominate them in that area.

100% biggest suprise for me too - playing looked like a guy who had no chance of getting in the AB's too.
I know they like older props who are 'mature'.. but I reckon if you're good enough you're good enough and this is a selection that could bite us in the arse next year. Should have had one youthful player in there -
The selection of Karl Tuinukuafe obviously means they are worried about the scrummaging ability of the other options.
(not saying I agree)
-
@WillieTheWaiter Aidan Ross is only 26, so plenty of years ahead of him whilst having a decent body of work under his belt.
-
With those prop selections we don't seem to be addressing the lack of ball running ability problem from last season.
Is this going to be more of the same the backs taken out of the game by us not getting over the gain line up front.
PGS there for that I suppose but won't start ahead of Ardie,RTS,LF will not get much game time it looks a lot like last year to me.The 23 looks like it will not change from last season. -
@WillieTheWaiter Maybe it's just for the July Series, and they may go for a different selection for the Rugby Championship/Bledisloe Cup?

I'd assume Samisoni starts ahead of Taylor - like way ahead.
But with this conservative coaching group, I fear you could be right. -

If they start ST instead of Taylor, and with Ofa's improved ball running/fitness (probably from the bench) you have two great ball running options just from the front row.
Akira/Ardie/Cane with Dalton on the bench gives good options there too. Really the locks that have to up that area of the game, so a lot resting on Scott Barrett IMO.
