All Blacks 2021

It’s funny. Savea is highly rated outside of this forum, whether that’s journalists or rugby fans from our opponents, but here he seems to be regarded as borderline useless. Someone is wrong.

He is considered unsuitable at 8 given our current loose forward mix.

He is an awesome bench and impact player, but not what this team needs at No. 8.

Ardie Savea to stay until 2025.
Great news, Ardie is awesome, I disagree with most of the posters here in thst. No point arguing it, but imo he was the best player along with Rieko, this year.
I do hope he does better than our last long term Savea signing, tho!
I'd like to think there is little doubt he has a lot of skill....im just not sure he actually fit into the team well, he's often just running around doing his own thing. I'd like our gameplan to be change to better utilise his gameplan or to have someone not quite as good...but better aligned with how the team is playing

Just to defend him (here), even the team doesn't fit into the team style of playing that well, although it seems to have adapted to help George play better.
I thought Savea had at least a couple of excellent games at 7 and 8 this year but yeah I think we need a specialist. The team is all literally 6s and 7s... (see what I accidentally did there).. -

the gameplan is around utilising him. basicly 3 7s and moveing the ball wide. any game plan to be more forward dominating i could not imagine use him at 8 and considering he might only be no 3 seven life could be interesting for him.

And we have been dominated physically all year when it mattered.
Don't get me wrong, Ardie is a world class 7, but he is not the answer at 8 for us.
Foster needs to go to specialists, not trying to fit players in, out of position
-
@taniwharugby
agree as i said in another thread big red has a opportunity if he can get more gametime and same with someone like sami finau and probably others -

yes, two perfectly valid approaches
1 pick the best players and come up with a game plan that works to their strengths, as used by those with knowledge of the games
various approaches2 decide the best game plan to beat the other teams out there and pick the best players FOR THAT GAMEPLAN, as used by those
that know the playersfozzie currently getting the worst aspects of both those approaches

I just watched the second test versus Wales 2016. Same fling it wide attacking structure. It worked cos Wales couldn't keep up, and there was some great individual play from the likes of Smith, Barrett, Ben Smith, Dagg. FFS we've literally been using the same attacking structure since 16. No deception, no pod variation, nothing from depth. Attack coach was some dude called foster, apparently

More applicable for 2022 and beyond. DMac will be playing 1st 5 for Suntory and wants to focus on that position once he returns to NZ. Back in May but won't be immediately eligible for the ABs.

All Blacks Player of the Year Nominees
After an elongated international season, the coveted All Blacks Player of the Year Awards shape as close contests with four outstanding nominees. Wing Will Jordan is up against loose forward Ardie Savea, fullback Jordie Barrett and centre/wing Rieko Ioane.
-
@duluth The article isn't clear on DMac's contract status. Maybe he says more in the podcast. I am also assuming he will be in the same situation as TJP, so will need to sign a new NZR contract. Reading between the lines he is keen to play for the ABs again so an overseas contract isn't an option.

Seems about right to me, best forward, two best backs (Ioane’s attack and Jordie’s reliability), and highest try scorer just to round out to 4

McKenzie will probably be fine but someday a player is going to get burnt by this. Maybe the price that NZR is willing to pay drops a lot in the next few months?
Also if he is serious about being a ten and J Ioane plays well, does he need to look at another franchise? You could have a situation where J Ioane becomes the clear 3rd choice. Does he have to look at the Canes?
Lots of risk, but lots of Yen too
-
At least he's up front about chasing the yen.
Ioane needs a big 2022 with the Chiefs if he wants to overtake DMac as the 3rd 1st 5 option for the ABs. As Ioane only signed a 1 yr contract, the Chiefs can choose who they want for 2023.
As to the wider question, players will need to decide if money is everything or they still want to be an AB. At the moment these short-term contracts seem to be the way forward if a player wants to make some good coin and refresh the body.

I assume that the Chiefs are trying to get Dmac signed and if they can't, they'll offer Joane an extension (or possibly push up one of the younger players).
I'm glad that Dmac wants to focus on 10, as if he comes back and plays well, he would be almost a certainty for a WC squad (covers 10/15) and if he plays well he could take the bench role off either Mo'unga or Barrett. We need him and more players putting pressure on the top two blokes.

I felt DMac improved as a replacement 10 this year...

@nostrildamus I think that 10 is his best future position. Good luck to him to build his skills in Japan. I do like the vision he has for space.
