All Blacks 2021

@machpants absolutely. We are only one match into the Championship. Next match v Aussie is critical too. Or am I mistaken?
-
@arhs Nope, you're right. I've seen some massive mistakes in some of the media, too, who've obviously lost track of where we are in the competition. I can excuse the rugby public no longer knowing where we're at, but so-called rugbywriters should know that we've (only) played one RC game. I've seen this next test described as the first RC game, or just Bledisloe 3 (which strictly speaking isn't correct either, although it is the third Bledisloe game).
-
-
@mariner4life Note the word "should". I see it as a job requirement that is often not met.

i gave up on that expectation long ago

Some good info here on the constraints caused by various quarantines both away and on return. Basically ABs only have X MIQ spots booked to come back to so injuries may not be able to be replaced and injured players may have to hang around as food bills.

Looking forward to seeing how Beauden goes at 10. It's a good opportunity for him to put some pressure on Mo'unga and also show if he still has it.
Yep will be interesting to see how he and TJP go, neither has really had much rugby lately, so is good to see how they go , just so we got reserves etc up to speed.

Mate, take my word for it, I don't take the newspapers word as gospel for much without checking on a few scources. I think not only them but any real hardcore rugby fan would or should know how many RC games have been played. It a shame that rugby writers seem to be so blase' on things like that because casual viewers can get bloody confused.

B Barrett or Taylor for me, but I would not rule out Weber.
Would think it between Ardie and Taylor.
-
in all hoesty, given the constraints and maybes in place, most especially on coming home, and the protocols they are going to be under the whole time, i am astounded that more of them have decided not to go
that's a long long time of being in a hotel room or training/playing code.

It might have almost been a plan to send 2 squads to different places

Perhaps they like the AB environment Foster has created.

When I read that article this morning my first thoughts was, I hope they aren't taking all of those NZR staffers that you only see when a RWC photo is taken. The MIQ numbers will be very bloated if they are also in the tour party.

Yeah, so 1 weeks soft quarantine in WA, then 13 weeks traveling the globe in business class, nights in high rated hotels with the boys. Followed by 2 weeks me time in a hotel in NZ. It's either that or trying home schooling in level 4

I'd willingly do a month of home-schooling other people's kids if it meant I could finally fuck off OS for a few months.
-
The All Blacks coach also clarified the likely return-to-play timelines around Joe Moody (foot) and Ofa Tuungafasi (knee) who were included in an eight-strong prop contingent that jetted out Thursday
“They’re both trending well. We were hoping Joe would be able to play in the NPC this weekend, so we could maybe look at Argentina 1 and Ofa is maybe a week behind that.”
-
It would be very nice if they were both back for the boks games.

You'd want to give them time off the bench in the Arg 2 test so they at least had some rugby under their belts.

You are forgetting the minimum 10 years of "when I looked after the kids in lockdown while you were with your mates" getting pulled out at every opportunity

Yep, the married players will pay the price - one way or another.

You gotta love the people that decry the current playing squad as vastly inferior to years gone past but have obviously just memory blocked that era where Weepu, Cowan and Ellis were the best halfbacks in the country.
All three still miles better than Perenara, Weber and Christie

I expected to see Harry Plummer added to the squad. Maybe good for Ofa T to be training over there if level 4 continues in Auckland.
As 10? Ehh... like him but not sure he's the next best 10 option. Hunt for me.
I agree Hunt is next best as a starter but thought they might break in someone slowly with a longer term view. I think Plummer has improved a lot this year. Should be playing 10 all the time I feel.
It’s probably time the AB selectors start looking to develop another ten. After the top two there isn’t much depth. We’re are an injury or two away from sub standard options
-
They had plenty of chances to develop Joane but clearly didn’t like him enough to stop them picking a thousand outside backs.
The cupboard is pretty bare too: Hunt is good, but not WC good; Joane seems to be out of favor; and Plummer is coming along, but has kicking issues (he’s really a 10/12). Love is also talent but it’s far too early to tell how good he might be.
Mo’unga, Barrett, Dmac, Hunt? Joane?

-
@gt12 It's not too awful. How many other teams have even two test-class first fives? We've got a World Player of the Year, who's probably not even first choice.
Add in DMac, who's played well enough in some tests, we're not too bereft.
I wouldn't particularly want to see Mitch Hunt starting a big test, but we're probably no thinner than 2011.

Hunt has peaked at 'not quite good enough'
I hope Ioane isn't done. Maybe getting out of Dunedin would help
Plummer, medium/long term is a 12. Although he has recently shown some good acceleration that AB 10's need now
Love might have the most upside. But maybe he's a better fullback?
Can't think of many other options? Trask shows flashes of quality but mostly at fullback..

Love was able to show glimpses of a different quality even though under obvious instructions to shovel it on and drop back.
Canes still think he’s a fullback so might be a problem.
I’m not seeing anything great from Trask but the Blues Sullivan looks to be talented and smart enough to build if he gets opportunities -
@duluth I have a lot of "what ifs" about Tiaan Falcon. What if he hadn't had so many injuries? What if he hadn't been stuck behind Dmac and had more game time at the Chiefs? What if he hadn't gone to Japan? He was a top talent for NZ U20s, but couldn't stay injury free.

He needs starts at ten though.. is his passing up to it? Does he have the running game the AB selectors want from their 10’s etc -

-
I wish at least one of Sullivan and Plummer would go somewhere they can play 10 consistently as I see the most potential in them. Trask has not come on yet. Love needs a bit more time to build his influence on a game. Don't think Hunt or Josh will get any better.

Ardie has been named captain. Great choice if you ask me. 😀
Let’s hope he starts at 7 and not 8 going forward though.
-
Knowler on the money again. Not!
I always thought it was going to be one of Savea or BB.
-
Ardie was the obvious choice to me.
Good pick.

Patrick McKendry: All Blacks set to make wrong choice for new captain
He got it correct, says it's the wrong choice, but provides no reasons
-
haha
-
They also confirmed that Brodie Retallick and Beauden Barrett would be vice-captains.
-
Really pleased for Ardie. He's worked damn hard for a number of years now and has developed into a top player. He seems like a highly respected bloke among his peers too.
