When should Foster go?
-
@junior thats like any job, knowing your role and delegation levels.
Sure sometimes a deadset opening presents itself, you take it, but otherwise you stick to the plan.
If everyone is free to play it as they see it, unless they all see the same picture....

This team don't appear to have the strong chain of command that Henry and McCaw built, and that Hansen carried on for much of his time. All these things add up to impact results on the pitch

When he was appointed, quite a few of us thought 'well, that's a dumb decision'. He was an assistant, a not-quite-good-enough to be be anything more than the bloke who stood in the shadows and nodded to the main man's big calls.
But for some bizarre reason, the NZ rugby gods decided to anoint the idiot apprentice to the throne. This was a man who was a water carrier to those who came before and who has not a single original idea in his skull.
The decision might have been excusable, but for the fact that NZ rugby has a wealth of talent spread out across the world, all itching to come back and start a new chapter after the Henry-Hansen era.
Foster is a footnote to that era. We ALL could see that. We all could see what a disaster it would be to install a 'mini-me' in the big boy's role. But the Kiwi rugby bosses thought otherwise, a decision I suspect relates to Hansen's preserving his legacy by anointing an inferior to take over from him. It's a classic strategy for making yourself look better than you are, giving the job to the idiot apprentice.
After losing twice in Australia - once to a Wallaby team full of part-timers and then to a fired-up Argentinian team that hadn't played international football for over a year, Foster is toast. They may stumble on with him for a few more months, but he's exposed as incompetent.
If this were a purely commercial decision, he would be gone today. If this were a purely national pride decision, he would be gone within a week. But, unfortunately, this is ultimately a decision that reflects badly on the numb nuts who selected him, so I suspect they will give him sufficient rope to hang himself and hope that he commits hari-kari next year.
Just as well a game against Wales is not on the calendar, because I can guarantee he'd blot that record as well. What an utterly clueless muppet.

He may have inherited a whole load of problems but he knew they were there when he took on the job. Key question for me is if he's the man to sort out the problems.
Give him until the end of the season to show if he's up to it.

I do wonder if you have ever kicked a rugby ball.
Bro, what the fuck? What would anyone here having kicked a ball have to do with Mounga consistently fucking them up? You think he's kicking a different ball than anyone else getting paid plenty of money to do so? Because we can quite easily compare.
The kick Mounga missed was about 45 out and 10-15 in from touch wasn't it? I don't think you can get a better position to be kicking it from even if you're a social club player, let alone a highly paid professional.
Knew someone was going to bring up Carter too. That's like saying it's ok for SB to give away the odd penalty because Retallick does too. At least Carter would still have the capacity to steer the team around, make tackles and score plenty of points if he made a mistake and not shrink back from it.

@Victor-Meldrew Foster can't even seem to sort himself out - let alone the rest of the team...These are just some of the questions he has failed to answer
Is Jordie a FB or a wing?
Is Beaudy a FB or 10 or supersub?
Do we play the double-edged sword with RM at 10 and Beaudy as FB - or has that experiment gone out the window now?
Where does Rieko even fit in - centre - wing - bench - or not?
Is Cane the right choice for skip?
Where is Ardies best position - starting 8 / 6 or bench?
How about putting more "offence" into the offensive defence - has been too bloody passive lately
Cleanouts need to be more dynamic and effective - we need to clear defenders off our ball
And the biggest one for me....
How do we combat the rush defence while creating that seed of doubt in the defenders minds ie keeping them guessing as to our next move -
Vision!! -

-FB or bench. Possible 10 replacement depending on if you prefer him or RM

-You could play BB at 10 and JB or WJ at 15. Or keep current 10-15 or have RM and BB or try RM and JB at 15. I don't mind JB or BB at 15 - they are probably doing enough there.
Where does Rieko even fit in - centre - wing - bench - or not?
-Wing, needs more experience and consistency to be at centre but can move there as sub. Bench also.
Is Cane the right choice for skip?
-Perhaps not but unlike others I don't think captaincy is the biggest issue.
Where is Ardies best position - starting 8 / 6 or bench?
-Starting 7 or bench (covers 7, 6, 8).
How about putting more "offence" into the offensive defence - has been too bloody passive lately
-you need a more aggresive forward or maybe 2. A cleverer SB? Sotutu at 8 adds something IMO but I also find SF a bit passive at 6.
Cleanouts need to be more dynamic and effective - we need to clear defenders off our ball
-Yes
And the biggest one for me....

-We need to kick, dummy and pass better for starters.
Vision!!
-The players have the experience. Something is missing. -
Virtually all those issues have existed for at least 2 years though, haven't they? I don't think he can take the blame for the clearouts and combating the rush defence for example - Hansen had plenty of time and didn't fix it.
I'm judging him on his ability to fix things and move things forward and think it's going to take some time. Personally I'm sceptical but he need a chance to do that. End of the season looks good for me.

A lot of the stupid mistakes just shouldn't happen. Reiko shouldn't fluff simple passes and fail to ground the ball, SB shouldn't do dumb stuff right in front of the Ref. This is basic schoolboy stuff.
None of this is due solely to Foster - it's been there for at least a year or more.
-
@Victor-Meldrew I dont think we need to wait a year do we? At this level - to quite Foster - you need to "lay down a marker" - pretty much immediately, and he has had more than enough time to show us what he has in the stores armory . Im afraid the Plan Cupboard is all but bare unhinged and is falling off the wall.
Foster has had too much time unvested in him already. The rest of the rugby world is laughing at our demise and meanwhile the "brand" has gone to hell in a handcart
Time to get real. Enough is enough. -

Time to get real. Enough is enough. The fact that he’s already been involved for 8 years before now means he’s not going to be afforded much grace for a transition period. He had to hit the ground running and he’s not

Wasn't Head Coach, wasn't solely in charge. Can't be solely to blame for years' old problems.
Should have been aware of the problems and had a plan to fix them. That might take more than 4-5 games. Personally not convinced but he needs to be given a fair go.

Great point.

Fair point, but only if he was in charge leading up to his appointment, which he probably wasn't. If the whole idea of Foster was to maintain continuity, then it seems to have have failed. Hard to say if that's due to him or not.

I am a RM fan, and think he is the best 10 we have at the moment, but when he missed that kicked I groaned and muttered something to the missus that he cannot afford to miss those kicks given the battle he is in for his spot. It was 100% the wrong time to fluff something like that and he let himself down badly.
Interesting concept that it is ok for some players to make the same mistakes as others simply because they are better players. Not sure I agree with that, but I do get where you are coming from.
I think RM and Barrett are copping too much of the blame for the last two losses. Our problems are way deeper than that.

It's not simply because they're better players though. It's because they'll do their job and do what's needed to get their team on top. RM had done SFA until then, that was a perfect moment to step up, do the basics and start to get his team looking like winners. And he can't even butter his bread, what he should be able to do with his eyes closed. It's not just a missed touch, I can't imagine that not having an effect on others in the team too.
Yeah problems are definitely bigger than that but when your guy who's supposed to be the master planner is so unreliable, you probably should start there.
