@kiwiinmelb i'd like to see everything short of deliberate foul play or punches dialled back a step,

so like scrums and single off sides kind of stuff is a free kick (repeated becomes a penalty), poor form or accidents become penalties and then leave the cards for the really grievous stuff

At the risk of starting World War 2, and whilst I understand the rules mandate it, but there being an automatic yellow card for what Scott Barrett did seems to me absurd.

Neither dangerous, nor thwarting a try, just stupid. A penalty in that situation is an entirely sufficient sanction.

Fuck that. Cynical cheating should be stamped on hard. People misjudging the offside line / coming up too quick, hands in ruck a second too long are judgement errors. What SB did was not a mistake, it was deliberate, so fuck him and the whores he rode in on.

    Nice

@pakman knocking the ball out of the halves hands while on the ground? no, no it does not.

I mean all the other 'slowing' the ball down. There seems to me quite a double standard.

    This

    @pakman care to elaborate?

Sneaky hands on ball at ruck is obvious one.

Isn't that a "not so sneaky" case we're talking about? Seems to get penalised a lot and would be YC'd in similar circumstances I'm sure.

    Still deliberate

Dumb as a bag of hammers. But not a YC.

Why not? Is there a law that you have to be on a warning? Or that the opposition must be about to score a try?

    Man in front of kicker?

Yeah, that gets my Grumpy Old Man back up too.

Years ago, when I used to ride my dinosaur to rugby whilst I was playing for Eden, one of the second division clubs (may have been College Rifles or Tamaki or some such) were denied a victory over Marist (complete with Brooke brothers, Kirwan, Wright and other illuminati) because some poor bloke was fractionally ahead of the 40m+ winning penalty.

It happens at touch finding penalties and kick offs all.da.time.

    Pisses me off.

    It's cheating and lazy.

It's so nice to have my prejudices reinforced

Scott Barrett should be fucked off for good
BB is still an ordinary test match 10
TJP is a substandard test match 9

I suppose I've become a bit blaise, but I do agree.

And in a world where the TMO checks everything it seems incongruous that, had kick gone over, no questions would have been asked.

Unless away team and Hometown TV replayed ten times! 😲

What was that rant he had at Wobs over 'mouthguard' just before Savea illegally fished pill out of 5 metre scrum?

@pakman man in front of the kicker at restarts has been a thing for years now...seems officials let some of those things go now, similarly hookers with thier feet over the sideline at lineouts

Had it been a penalty which went over, should the TMO have pointed out to ref that men were in front?

    Yes

No, that would be ridiculous. As with any offside, the referee should interpret if it had any impact on the play itself. Clearly in this instance it did not.

Had the ball clattered off the post and Hooper regained the ball or made a covering tackle then it's definitely a penalty though.

    It's not "offside".

@Kiwiwomble maybe Gardner has colour blindness to pink?

    BTW. Pink boots.

Lining up for the anthem I only saw pink as a colour. Maybe I'm colour blind.

Around a quarter or so had pink, the rest seemed to be black (or at least non noticeable).

Would be an interesting exercise to check correlation with hair colour.

Which one of Jordie or Beauden is dying their hair light brown?

Out of interest, checked the Hodge long ranger which did land, and Hoooooopaaa was careful to stay behind.

Some random thoughts following a belated rewatching of last 30:

    • A key difference was that Oz put 10 on us when we had yellow, and we were outscored when Koroibete off! A heinous failure to take anything from last minute or two of first half on Wobblie goal line.

    • Oz 22 exits were excellent. Ours were muddled, apart from one howitzer from Giraffe.

    • All Barretts very mixed bags. Good, bad and ugly.

    • Not sure Laumape did much wrong, although impact much less than hoped for. I'd have kept him and swapped Reece, who was error prone.

    • Around 60 mark AB forwards weren't getting to the rucks. One led to penalty which Hodge missed.

    • Subs by both sides at 50 swung game Oz's way.

    • In last 13 the big territory gains by both sides were upshot of soft penalties -- Scooter/Aumua high tackle/Bell intereference with Weber at ruck (77).

    • Tupou.

    • Backline much better when Weber came on. His service got things moving. And assist for last try.

    • ABs very sloppy.

    • Might have been different if Karl kept on another 10/Laumape stayed and Reece off/TJP subbed around the 65.

    • Jordan HIA had unusual impact in that made it difficult to bring Vaa'i on after Scooter yellow, because no back reserves left. Otherwise maybe Jordan off and DMac to come on at 77.

yeah, ive been happy to give Laumape a bit of a pass on that game, hard for a 12 to do much when the 9 is having a bad one and the 10 is completely missing, he was basically having to start stuff flat footed but with the rush defence in his face

I couldn't quite see the reason for the dissing on Laumape apart from him not being a standout. Agree with the comment above.
If your 9 is having a bad one nothing works (including an effect on BB)
I would like to think that BB, as the recipient of crap to deal with and as a senior player, would have let the coaches know.

My observation of the game on second viewing is how good our kicking game was, and how average the AB kicking game was.

That was in many ways the winning and losing of the game, and followed the script from game 1 - we used our kicking game to advantage and to limit the AB broken field opportunities. Some of BB and JB's kicks were really average, especially in the final 20.

Compare that to game 3 where our kicking was abysmal and the ABs scored three (or more?) tries directly from kicks.
