Foster is a RWC SF level coach? Sounds optimistic to me!
Rennie just beat Foster's All Blacks with a team he found at Petrie Terrace!

Rennie has hardly been impressive either with a record loss just last week. I'm not a fan of Foster's but he shouldn't be totally blamed for the loss, he can't control the stupidity and ill discipline of some of his players.

Probably typical kiwi arrogance, but I tend to think most teams apart from SA think beating the ABs is a successful season.

I’m just thankful to the rugby gods that we aren’t playing those 8 foot 300 pound Bok forwards that move around the park like fleet footed sprinters, discarding little ol’ AB minions, and the Bok halfback that fires bullet like passes from every scrum and ruck to their unflappable 1st 5 that need not run the ball because he can nail 50+ Metre droppies.

Thank you Covid. Thank you China.

They're no England but. I think the whole country of Italy dissolved after the thrashing they got at the oversized hands of a merciless England and their unstoppable wingers.

I watched the Bok trial , I was not exactly shaking in my boots.

@akan004 a draw and a win out of 4 with his 2 major playmakers out for the last..2?
I think Rennie did pretty well, considering.

Stats can be manipulated to sound good. In reality he won against a team that made 13 changes from the previous week as well as 2 positional changes. I give him credit for the Wellington performance but his team were very poor in the next two games and won a dead rubber against a fairly experimental lineup.

Am not taking anything away from Wallabies victory btw, they can only play the team that's in front of them. I just think we have to take into account the AB changes for this test when assessing Rennie's overall performance so far and imo he's been no better than Cheika was in his first year.

But many on the Fern wanted Akira starting, Jordie at 15, Laumape at 12, Reiko on the wing and BB at 10 to see how he went.

He Listened. They lost. We blame Fozzie....

    The bench was the problem.

Clearly, route 1 is winning Bill (or other big trophy). Otherwise, SA haven't had many recent successful seasons.

I'd say route 2 would be keeping test losses at 2 or under in a full season (perhaps 3 or under, depending).

One win against the ABs for the sake of it, while welcome, doesn't cut it. The "Wobs" have done that in 3 of the last 4 years ... (I use that name with kindness because it defines failure; they're trying to improve but aren't a good team).

Two such wins would be route 3 to a successful season. Closest so far, and for a long time now, is a win and a draw.

@akan004 the difference being one team was changed due to injury, one by choice. I.e. coaching.

Did they have 13 changes? Besides, the Wallaby changes were made to improve the team, ours was to build depth. Can you really look at rankings once that many changes have been made? It's amazing how you just glossed over the two defeats, one being the biggest ever between the two countries.

I don't have a problem with the no of changes he made . He could have taken the easy route, played the same team as last week, probably won the game and then beat the Argies in the next two which would possibly have secured him a two year contract extension. Instead he took a big risk in order to try an build a bit of depth.

@akan004 it's not building depth though. Throwing guys in for a game or half a game when most of the team is completely different and either haven't played together in a test or haven't in years, then you're setting them up to fail.

Building depth is building a solid team with a solid core and then building experience around that with small changes.

Agree with this but I will allow one small mitigating factor in that they don't have the usual number of games in which to do that.

A B team is one thing. This was an inexperienced B team

@Bones I think there's a lot of truth in what you said. I also think that he underestimated the Aussies after the big Sydney win as well as the disruption the changes were going to make to our combinations. The shortened calendar also possibly played a part in influencing the amount of changes.

But it's easy to say this in hindsight. Pre game, most of us on here were excited by the changes (apart from TJ) and supported it. If TJ wasn't so bad and SB wasn't a thick cu nt, we most likely would have won it. Foster has to take a lot of the blame for not bringing on the bench earlier though, that's on him.

This is the bit that sticks in my craw though. The benefit of succession is supposed to be he's been there, done that and shouldn't be repeating mistakes like wholesale changes and underestimation.

@Bones Yeah, in hindsight he got it wrong and underestimated the wallabies. Might count against him when his contract is up for renewal.

Exactly. It was said before the game that this is a lesson Hansen learned and stopped doing.
