@taniwharugby yeah, probably a bit of ego in it, i always got the impression he wanted a bit more wooing than just reply to our posting on seek, and then NZR might have been too proud to actually go after anyone...so ended up having to pick from the ones that applied rather than possibly the best coach
Rennie was asked to apply but said he was too far along in discussions with RA so declined.

As someone suggested earlier, I reckon NZRFU always planned on giving Fozz a chance, and the others heard the story and decided not to bother. If so that was poor process by the people responsible for the hire. FFS appointment of the AB coach is more important than the PM!!!

My issue with BB at 10 is in the past the backline just has not hummed with him, really static, and for some reason his kicking from hand in that position not inspiring either.
Yeah, lets not all forget that a huge portion of the shit play the ABs have served up over the last 3 years has had BB at 10. Individual brilliance aside, the backline and tactical play has been frustratingly poor for a long time.
Whoever the 10 is, I think they are going to struggle with these tactics of playing off scarps of ball and flinging it wide at the first opportunity without the forwards generating some momentum. That just leads to messy disjointed play in the backline. Then the ball gets kicked away.
The backline tactics have been junk for ages. I wonder who the backline coach was 🤔
Not as bad as our forwards tactics of playing like passive wooftas earning only 35 % possesion , all on the back foot.

Jamie Joseph with Tony Brown as the backs/attacking coach might have been the answer
This. Ah, the thought of it .... I will now have to sit at my desk an extra 5 minute until my erection has gone down.

Was the coach appointment made before Tew left or was it the first job of the new ceo?
Edit: Hiring Fozzie was most likely a board decision.
But will still blame Robinson.I believe Robinson had no say on the recruitment process as that was already locked in - but he was involved in the decision.
The appointment panel that chose Foster comprised NZR chairman Brent Impey, incoming chief executive Mark Robinson, NZR head of high performance Mike Anthony, former All Blacks coach Graham Henry and former New Zealand netball coach and High Performance Sport New Zealand director Waimarama Taumaunu.

@Rancid-Schnitzel at best Foz makes a good go of it and proves us all wrong. At worst we can hope his bosses choose not to renew his contract at the end of two years and the new coach has a couple of years to get us right before RWC 2023
I actually have this part categorised as "at best"

@chimoaus Raelene knew two years in advance of the RWC that Cheika was fucking pants. She just couldn't get rid of him because a) no money to pay out contract and b) no decent alternatives off contract. That's why Johnson was brought in as DoR - to try and reign Cheika in as much as possible.
Rennie was lined up well in advance. Seems her succession planning was just a bit ahead of youse guys.
I really rated Raelene...

Yeah she did a brilliant job with Foulhow.

The Wallaby gig must be pretty attractive for an NZ coach who feels he doesn't have a shot at the ABs. Well paid, relatively close to home, awesome lifestyle, relative anonymity. I wouldn't image a great deal of arm twisting is required.
-
I recall NZ Rugby identified 26 potential candidates and invited them to apply. Relatively - quite late in in the piece, though. Seemed like a number of them did apply - including, obviously, Fozzie and Robertson, but also Rennie and JJ. Presumably, the latter two got offered their jobs with Oz and Japan and had to make a call on whether to take the bird in the hand.
I suspect that if they'd won the RWC, NZ Rugby just would have rubber-stamped Fozzie into the position without running any sort of process.
So relatively, we're no worse off than we would have been under this scenario, except for not having the WWET sitting in our cabinet.

The All Black coaches could do worse than speak to Rennie’s former Chiefs assistant coaches to learn some of his on field game plans.
-
@Chris-B the other thing is, Rennie & Joseph knew the role was going to be up for grabs, assume they thought Fozzie would get it, or maybe Razor would, so didnt bother applying, then we were left with the 2 horse race we got...

Or just have a chat to Cane and ALB.

The biggest problem there is that the ideal team would have been Robertson plus Rennie or Joseph, Brown, Robertson. That type of team would make it much harder for the NZRFU to go with Fozzie and ??
The problem was that neither Rennie (fucking traitor) nor Joseph really wanted the job, and that Brown didn't them join up with Robertson. Him by himself is just not attractive enough to make the big change.
-
@gt12 not sure they didnt want the job, just timing...Rennie was advanced in his talks with Aus, assume JJ was being offered so much money...plus I dont think any of them were willing to work together (I mean Razor, Rennie & JJ....imagine that team )
