2021 British & Irish Lions tour to SA

I was trying to think of who it reminded me of. Thanks for clearing that up!

So I watch the entire video and it is shit. Having hour long whinge about refereeing decisions a just bullshit.
But it is not even a good whinge, stylistically it was done badly. When you try and convince someone of something you don't open with your weakest point. The Curry tackle was naughty, but was correctly punished, so just shut up about it.
But in there are couple of grains of truth. When a ref puts down a marker on x, y or z and be super strict on certain actions he can't just ignore his own standard 5min later. Like the Bongi high tackle, giving or not giving the penalty could both be correct decisions but when the exact same thing happens five minutes later you need to stick to the standard you have set. Ben O'Keefe is extremely bad at this, pulling up completely random penalties out of his ass on things he let go the whole game.

"I heard Rassie has contacted Peter Jackson about doing a 6 hour trilogy on Munsters loss to Scarlets in Pro12 final"
"My favourite bit is when he says "we don't want to nit pick and show every mistake they made" whilst providing an hour long video of nit picking"
**"My favourite part of the video was when he kept replaying Daly holding Mapimpi back (fair). But the same replay kept showing Lukhanyo Am absolutely smashing Henshaw with no arms to knock the ball loose in the first place. No mention of it."**
"Gatland is living in a 50 story skyscraper inside Rassie's head"
"I dont know, first the burner account now the hour long video. Kinda turning into the trump of rugby"Mine was at 39.53. He's complaining about the Itoje turnover on the Lions line. Talking about Faf being on his feet and at the same moment not mentioning the guy not on his feet - Motsert diving over the ruck like an exocet.
It's rugby FFS. It's a bloody hard game to referee. There are technical infringements at most breakdowns. Literally any team could make a video like this after a game highlighting calls that didn't go their way.

I watched to there so far. Quite a few fair points, but the hard done by posturing is just awful.
I would say that the 8 - 2 penalty count in the second half is not looking good in hindsight.
On the park is where the talking should be done.

So after a week of fun and games with Twitter burner accounts whinging about refereeing in the first test, Rassie releases his magnum opus. An hour long refereeing whinge, bitching about everything down to not straight lineouts. Absolutely the most pathetic thing I've ever seen from a Head Coach/DOR following a test match.
Rassie’s been posting on GAGR

I'm sure the 8-2 penalty count is wrong.
But if someone from the Lions camp was batshit crazy enough to produce an hour long video highlighting every Boks infringement in response, then we'd be able to see that the correct penalty count should have been something like 28-22

Someone did the first three minutes of the game in this Twitter thread: -
@pakman didnt really need to engage with him on this decision as on field decision was try so they were already on his side, so to speak.
I think this was trying too hard to find insult. AWJ had a few seconds longer with the ref before he walked away.
Kolisi is one of the most respected players in the game so it seems to be nitpicking and trying to find something to complain about

On that occasion I’d agree, but seemed to be the fact that AWJ was better at getting into pole position.
History now, and less than 48 hours till the next instalment…

I hope World Rugby fine the fuck out of him and give him a lengthy ban for bringing the game into disrepute - dsgusting
All of this. It'll feed into his victim narrative, and he won't care if it helps sway the 2nd test their way, but needs to be done anyway.

Yeah they need to make a stand that it is not OK in rugby. We are getting enough sccerism in as it is (diving, waving hands, whining at the ref on field) but having a some one of so high standing to take the time to do afucking hour long 'my pussy hurts' video is disgusting. As mentioned above you could do the same thing from the Lions perspective. Or about any game.
-
The complex rules and pressures on the officials are the real issue. Coaches must be tearing their hair out with such high stakes. Not good form from Rassie but I sympathise with where he is coming from and the shoes he fills. Yes you could demonstrate 20 wrong calls against you if you look hard enough at the video in most matches. But it runs both ways. It is just a game after all.....
-
So I have been thinking more about the video.
I am by my nature sympathetic to Erasmus, because a) I am South African, b) I whinge about refereeing generally and c) I think the calls in this game did in fact influence the course of the game. But I just can't get behind him on this one and the reason is not because it's a bad look to be whinging about refereeing, but because the execution was so incredibly poor.
What appears to have happened in this case is that Berry had pre-match meetings with the teams where he said he'll focus on certain things. The Springboks felt he moved away from the guidance he gave before the game.
During the game the reffing group also made certain calls (which is their job) which the Springboks were unhappy with.
It appears that the Springbok team reached out the reffing group after the game to try and get clarity. Erasmus wanted to have that meeting on Sunday, but the refs only responded Tuesday (I have no idea what the normal process is).
I am speculating that the Tuesday meeting did not go well and that Erasmus made the video in response to that meeting.
My problem with this whole affair is that video is so poorly constructed that it not 100% clear what Erasmus is trying to say.
It would have been far simpler to make a comment in the press that the feedback from the refs and world rugby was unsatisfactory and then to leak the examples to the press.
This has been an incredibly difficult tour for all involved and it has been hard to keep the enthusiasm going with Covid disruptions and empty statuims. The lions and their media have been pretty good on this tour (compared to say 2009 where it was a six weeks of negativity and spite). This whole thing is just embarrassing, too negative at a time that South African rugby really doesn't need it.

I just can't believe that Berry is considered good enough to get a Lions' Test.
