RWC: Japan v Ireland (Pool A)

Ireland just don't have the fitness. Their legs were gone at 35 minutes, and the halftime break didn't really make as much of a difference. In the second half the Japanese 6 was making ground with just about every carry. Plus Ireland's lock just seem a bit soft

Thank you Japan!!! you have made this tournament far more exciting for me!!
I was starting to think it will be boring until the semis for NZ but if you can beat Scotland (which I believe you can) then the quarter final becomes far more exciting because there is actually a chance we can lose to Ireland.
There’s actually a chance we can beat Ireland. Which is great isn’t it.

Apparently BOD was a pundit on the Irish coverage and didn't take the result well. If anyone has the footage and can post it I will be eternally grateful
Was on the ITV coverage.
He had the look of a man who's swallowed a wasp during during a live TV interview and that distracted him from the fact he's also having a severe bowel spasm.

But he was all class

Yeah, thought he handled quite well, though his emotions were obvious.

Rather that than a talking head who doesn't give a toss either way

I don't see it as being one game, not very genuine to say that. Ireland have been on the decline all year.
This. Looked to me other teams had worked out Ireland in the last 6N's
I think it's more age and injuries that have caught up with some of Ireland's key players.
While they have Sexton to hopefully come back, its the likes of Best, Healy, Stander, Kearney, Murray and O’Mahony that haven't being playing well in 2019 - effectively half the team.
England destroyed Ireland in the 6N's and August friendly's and Scotland ran them close in teh 6N, which was why I was surprised to see such a poor Scottish display last week.
It will be interesting to see how Ireland cope with Samoa. If Samoa manage to keep a full team on the field, I think Ireland will struggle.

@PecoTrain
The big game is Japan vs Scotland IMO. A lot of possible permutations from today's result, with Ireland, Scotland and Japan all potentially being 1st, 2nd, or being knocked out. Samoa too, though I can't see them toppling 2 of Japan, Ireland and Scotland. -

I honestly think that NH teams underestimate the mental strain of being number 1 and the expectations that come with it. You get the sense that ABs players and management are in the best mental space right now because they have dealt with it for years in and out of the World Cup. The weight of expectation was just to much for Ireland.

For all those concerned about Ireland in the QF, I'm moderately relaxed. We just have to score points - last time we only got 9 against them. If we get 9 points, we lose, and well played Ireland.
This time, I think the conditions will suti us better (hotter), our prep is better, and mentally we shold be right up for it. Good luck Ireland, they'll have a big game in them, but it's going to be tough for them to exit the pool fresh and determined after Samoa and Scotland to play yet.
Our attack looks transformed from last year. We have unlocked the rush against SA, and I beleive we'll do it again soon.
What a tournament!

Isn't this result kind of bad for us and potentially good for the Boks?
Potentially yes. But I think Ireland’s gameplan has been found out. They also rely on sexton who has been under an injury cloud. They also can’t take the Samoa game for granted so only Russia can get the B team. If they play like today though, NZ wouldn’t be losing.
How many of the team that just lost to Japan were their best team or was it all second stringers? Just wondering if total lack of depth partially explains the loss.
Main omission Sexton. Seems essential for ireland nowadays.

Schmidt has said he wishes to spend more time with his family and their parents given the time away from NZ - this probably gives the best explanation.
His Mum died around end of July.

A sage Irishman I know well observes that Irish never play well in warm conditions.
