CWC Game #8 Black Caps v Australia

Yeah the Sodhi selection was an odd one also. Didn't pick him on a pitch which out and out demanded they did, but then brought him in on a so-so pitch pretty much entirely only because it had been used.
Starting to really question Steads' selectorial nous.

Become a bit hardened to it over the years ,
Aussies nearly always seem to have our number when it matters ,
Pretty much a mirror image of the ABs Wallabies scenario

You can also question the wisdom of our poor build-up. The Nicholls Blundell non-selection (if he was previously fit) while the two out of form choices wasted all the reps against the lesser lights might come back to haunt us as the chances of getting those two up to speed now to slim. I think getting to the semis will be a good achievement for this team

Pathetic
-
Glass half full approach is I don't think we can beat Australia twice in a World Cup so better to lose to them in pool play.
And yes to have to play them twice we would have to make the semis.
-
This game was so bloody frustrating. We had them on the ropes at 96-5. Took some screamer catches. Then let them off the hook with some average bowling. Then Trent's hat trick. But 244 was totally doable. Instead we brought in poor Nicholl to face the best and most in form team with no fucking matches behind him. Then our entire middle order crapped out. All we needed was one guy to make 50-60, then a few 30-40s and the rest to chip in. (Also a bit unfair on Sodhi, brought in rusty, on a pitch not suited to him, against Australia.)
Really perplexing choices made this game. And last up we have England. Goody.

@Chris-B (who seems to have deserted us in our time of need) was at pains to point out that our lack of prep would hurt us and he's right. While Aus got their full strength side together for prep we played a B team. It's disappointing as we do have the talent but our selections and gameplans are letting us down.
-
Yep, our seemingly haphazard selection approach continues ☹
Would like to see blundell get a chance, but like sohdi and Nichols getting thrown in with fuck all game time makes it a big ask.
-
So did some maths at breakfast this morning guppy averaging 25 and Munro 22 for the cwc. If you get rid of the first none pressure game vs srilanka I think guppy is averaging 12 and Munro 13.... We aren't going to win if these two can't start us off with a decent platform in the next two games
-
Well I've seen that old "gettable target, with a limp wristed chase" against Aussie scenario sssoooooooo many times.
On slow turning tracks we so often get found out. All those drop in belters we use covers up the skills that Usman and Carey ( an Aussie AB de Villiers in the making?) showed. But you can shuffle the deckchairs forever but there is a lot of underperforming going on with a lot of players.
Kane's spin bowling was the most likely, not that the others were poor, but he had more bite coming out of his weird action.
So another thrashing by the ockers in an important game. Lucky I have 4 decades of scar tissue from previous nz cricket dung piles to form a barrier between expectations and realities 🙂. One game at a time.
Hopefully India put us through tonight and then we play 2 knockout games for the ages and we all rejoice in kiwi ingenuity!
You can be world champions without being the best in the world can't you?

I agree. After we beat them in 2015 you knew they weren't going to underprepared for us. Hopefully if we find ourselves in the same situation in the SF we will do it differently. I'd be happy if we threw our strike bowlers in to cripple their batting line up and accept the risk of not having them at the death

Have only watched highlights.
Carey is the fucking man.
That is all.
Pffffft. Settle down. It was clearly a second string BCs attack. No Henry OR SOuthee.
Oh sorry, you're right. You only had Angry Mo and Starc Lite, who opened with The Zimbot.
EDIT: forgot to mention your front line spinners got 1 less wicket combined than your part timer. Slow clap.
-
This was a limp wristed performance that we should make some changes for. 92 - 5 and you bowl your best bowlers out because 1 more wicket and you had them - Kane what are you doing? He is very conservative Captain. Bowlers allowed too many 4 balls in overs and released pressure - full or down leg. Chasing they needed to keep turning the strike over and play with intent. We aren’t good enough to sit back like this regardless of the pitch.

Stead seems to have imposed his own 90's approach to batting on the team

I hope Stead has some kind of master plan

Has the convention of the captain selecting the match day 11 changed recently?
-
@rotated no one actually knows who selects the 11 but I postulate that Kane's standing is such that I can't see justification for his input to be ignored.
Blaming selectors for the failings of international capable players is putting the cart before the horse in my opinion.
