Aaron Smith will play his 82nd Test match and become the most capped All Blacks halfback in history, overtaking Justin Marshall, while Brodie Retallick and Samuel Whitelock will set a new record for an All Blacks starting lock partnership, starting in their 50th Test together.

I really hope he doesn't go on to do "expert comments".

    Hand grenade time....

Marshall was better than Smith is.

Eras make it difficult to judge but Marshall was bloody effective and 96 vs boks best series ever by a NZ halfback

    Dare I say it, discuss

Imagine if Meg had a decent pass?

He's not even the best AB halfback to come out of Canterbury. No, not Bruce Deans but Bachop.

    No, just no.
    no

Simon Culhane was bloody effective on that series too and held a world points scoring record at one stage. See if you can find anyone who thinks he's better than Carter.

@machpants Don't know what Foster hopes to gain from criticising Aki for doing what was best for his career when Foster didn't pick him for higher honours.

Aki has been copping a fair bit this week from various sources. It's kind of like people just worked out that he's playing for Ireland now, but hey I'm sure he's shrugged it off.

There was some quite animated discussion about it here a few years back, some twat from the emerald Isle tried to claim it wasn't poaching . Apparently its not poaching there was a "tacit agreement" according to him.

There was talk/mockery about how ridiculous it was to give Michael Bent a jersey when he turned up at Dublin airport too.

How does Kearney still keep getting picked? Surely there's better fullbacks in Ireland.

He's not a NZ style FB in that he's not really that much of a threat on attack anymore, but he's far and away the best defensive FB Ireland can choose. If you watched Argentina last week, Larmour was a bit at sea under the high ball. The Irish team is not the same without Murray, it's a big loss.

I think they will bring Toner in, and we should relentlessly target him. Ireland also have Ryan and especially O'Mahony as lineout options. Best can have off-days with the throws, we should try and force him to throw long.

It would be nice for NZ to start well for a change, rather than rely on catch-up. If Ireland get a lead, the crowd will come into play.

Remember when Southland almost cloned him and came up with Jimmy Cowan? During the 2011 rwc Alby Mathewson was watching a game from the comfort of his couch and tweeted "someones going to pull a hammy trying to catch Jimmys passes".

Good bants, but Cowan did have a couple of good years between about 2008 and 2010. He did fall off a cliff before 2011 and was very lucky to get a RWC-winners medal. Thank God for Andy Ellis (never thought I'd say that!)

Can't remember Bachop playing 80 odd games.

But facts don't matter with opinions huh?

Marshall pass wasn't the liability that Smith's defence is against a decent forward pack. Smith was poor against the books last 2 games, just not up to the physicality.

Both are great players but Marshall had less limitations, scored more tries (24 - 16), kicked better and never cried on telly 😉

For sure Smith has a better pass but apart from recency bias, name one other attribute he is distinctly better than Marsh at?

Until he started commentating, I couldn't hate Marshy because, during those dark years between 1998 and 2003, he was often the only guy on our team who looked like he wanted to win and was prepared to do something about it.
