A no.8 that never fulfilled his potential was Isitolo Maka. The test in Durban in 1998 changed when he left the field, never to seen in black again.
Can remember thinking, The f*g dirty Boks!, only to find out it was a flying Robin Brooke elbow!
Why did he not make the 1999 squad? I remember the late Dylan Mika got a spot instead of him. The 'barnstorming' Taine Randall didn't quite have the same impact.
Pies and KFC.

Joe Sullivan - retired from rowing at about 25 after winning gold in the 2012 London Olympics. Later a grinder for Team NZ though so didn't stay retired.
That's a good one - I suspect semi-professional sports are littered with examples.
-
I would expect rowers and swimmers etc to retire about then? Maybe rowing is a a sport more suited to slightly older.
It's just the modern 'artificial ' state cash keeping some of the Olympic athletes in the sport longer?
When would a rower expect to retire pre 15 years ago?
If you're an absolute superstar like Phelps or Thorpe then there would be enough money to keep them going independently.

@rapido Agree. Loader might have gone on to win at the next Olympics, but only at the cost of four years lost to his career. Doubtful it is worth it for a guy who has nothing to prove, because he's already got Olympic gold.
I was annoyed when he retired that people complained that he was depriving "us" of potential gold medals. Like "we" were doing the work.

Yep I hate that shit. Kiwis are awesome at getting all over bandwagons. 'Us' when the team wins and 'them' when they lose.

I’m just wondering if that was a typo. Counties. Did you mean countries? Or perhaps cunties?

No way he would have won gold anyway with the rise of Thorpe and that Dutchie.
