Was that the first session they'd attempted to doctor the ball? If it was I can see how the bowlers might not have noticed - there is also the chance that Bancroft was shit at it, so while he was having a good ol rub, it wasn't making much difference!

So one thing we can deduce from that story is that Bancroft is apparently as think as Warner. Seriously, that is some fucking braindead shit to try at international level in a hotly contested series.
It also highlights how Smith was not cut out for the captaincy. Would Waugh, Border et al have turned a blind eye to that, or immediately bent both Warner and Bancroft over their knee and given them the spanking of a lifetime for even contemplating something so retarded? The inmates really were running the asylum in that team.
Long term this is probably a good thing for Aus cricket, but they're gonna go through some serious pain the the short term.
Agree, although I can see a scenario where the bowlers didn't know. Every side has a designated ball shiner, who the ball is thrown to between every delivery. They know their job, and do it without much consultation with the bowlers.
It's possible that there was an understanding that Warner would employ various dark arts to help the ball reverse (which I imagine are employed by all teams), but when Warner decided to go nuclear that they weren't in the loop.
And it's clear the sandpaper strategy wasn't immediately obvious to anyone holding the ball - not the bowlers, not the umpires. It wasn't even replaced.

Oh please. When has Australia EVER been bereft of quality batsmen? They'll pluck some other freakish youngster from Sheffield Shield or wherever, he'll slot in and score runs like he's been born to the post, and the team will mosey on. It's what the fuckers do. *

I don’t know, I can see them struggling, they have lost their 2 best batsmen. The Sheffield shield isn’t anywhere near as strong as it once was. Remember when they used to have guys scoring over 10,000 first class runs @50 who couldn’t break into the team?
Look who they are bringing over for the 4th test. 3 guys who have each been discarded in recent times.
Their bowling depth is fine, batting not so. -

Wtf? Kohli is a first rate plum but the rest of the team seem like decent blokes and are definitely a lot more likeable than the Aussies.

Their bowling depth is fine, batting not so.Maybe. But I don't discount the power of a stronger captain, a calmer, more disciplined changing room, and a bunch of Aussies thinking it's us against the world and fuck you we're going to come back stronger, either.

The lynch mob is far worse than any punishment the ICC and CA could dish out. Lehman talked about being concerned for the welfare of the players.
Kane's comments re: Warner were a good attempt to try and break up the mob mentality a bit. He's very fucking far from the worst person in Australia let alone the world but you wouldn't know it right now.

I see ( almost like it's irrelevant given what's going on ) that Steve Smith has an average of 61. That's fucken head and shoulders above everyone except he who may not have even existed ( I never saw Bradman bat, perhaps he's just made up ). It's better than Kohli, Root and old mate KW.
So yeah I hear all the talk of recent years and how many brilliant batsmen they had but I think Virg is correct in that a few mid 30s journeyman get a shot for Australia. Losing Smith would be an absolute MASSIVE loss.
In other musings.....what the actual fuck was he thinking? Cheating is supposed to be what people who are no good do.....not the best players!

@no-quarter Yep. The headlines claiming this is Aussie sport's darkest day etc etc are fucking ridiculous. In the scheme of things, league has provided infinitely more dark moments. I mean when you think of the domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, drugs and doping, salary cap infringements... a few dickheads with sandpaper kind of pales in comparison.

@mokey salary cap "infringements" happen all the time.
What we've seen in the NRL is systematic cheating running through every level of clubs, from the boards down. It's far worse than what we have here.
But most NRL players and coaches aren't half as sanctimonious as Warner, in particular, manages.

I think the level of outrage is more down to what cricket means in the Australian psyche compared to what League means. Where boganicity is pretty much expected and even applauded to a degree.
