Yep pretty pathetic by Smith in that press conference. Even if it was something Bancroft did alone it would be a shit thing to do, let alone for Smith to later say it was the senior players who came up with the idea. He should "cop it sweet" as the cheat islanders would say.

@hydro11 did you watch the clip? Smith absolutely threw it to Bancroft rather than explain himself. Sure he added a mea culpa afterwards but...
It made sense for Bancroft to explain as he was the person who did the ball tampering. Smith answered most other questions. It's cheating and shitty to get Bancroft to do it in the first place but I don't see why the press conference is worth being critical of.

Smith should have opened and then passed to Bancroft. No doubt Bancroft needed to explain his actions but I think they needed to front that this was a leadership idea from the outset.

Watch the first bit where Smith throws Bancroft under the bus
Smith and Boof should be sacked. 'The boys in the shed are embarrassed'. So much remorse (after being caught).
In his rambling, though, he did confess to bringing the game into disrepute.
.....and it is all so fucking hilarious!
Mate I don’t see it as hilarious at all. They’ve been caught out blatantly cheating, so blatant that they’ve had to fess up. That’s not good for cricket and it’s a real fucking slap in the face for the Aussie supporters. I know, cue much mirth about their plight but the majority are genuine fans of the game and deserve better. I know if this had been England I’d be ropable.
Yup, and in the professional era with money involved, there should be lengthy bans (at the very least) handed out to all involved. No player is bigger than the game, no matter how good. Throw the fucking book at them.
If this was the BCs it would really test my resolve to even keep supporting them. Not sure I could ever really get behind the players that did this again. The fans of the game deserve so much better.

It just looked bad.
Smith seems to be taking the line that even though he is the captain and was party to the cheating, he isn't responsible.
Well, he says he takes responsibility, but then he doesn't actually do so. -

@nta yeah we really try and create an environment for player growth, you think these young guys show up as ready made grubs?! Takes years of development to get to hadden-esque levels mate 😁
Whenever I hear the name Haddin I get triggered.
I'm no better than any SJW whinger. I'm ashamed.

What pisses me off is that the Poms and the Aussies were up in arms about Wasim, Waqar and Imran developing Reverse swing in the early 90s to begin with and the level of vitriol directed their way via the ECB/MCC and ACB/CA was loud and prolonged. Can you imagine the sanctions that would apply now if say Sri Lanka or Pakistan had done this now?
Australian Cricket is completely fucked behaviourally and the person who has to take the blame as well is the Chief Idiot in Charge who has signed off on the hypocrisy to begin with.

I'm not like a lot of kiwis who put the boot into the Aussies at the slightest thing ( some great comments on stuff from morons who wouldn't know a cricket bat from a baseball bat ) but Australia are doing themselves absolutely no favours with their carry on.

@synicbast a fair point, but at the same time the game in the subcontinent was corrupt as fuck. Crooked umpires, and competition prizes or money that just disappeared if the home side lost, in addition to the ball tampering.
Good point Nick. At the time I couldn't fathom how the best fast bowling duo I've ever ( and still ) seen felt the need to cheat as they did.

Hence my more serious post underneath that one.
The hilarious-ness of it is that it comes after Boof just tried to take the moral high ground and the incessant talk about not crossing lines. That part is funny.
IMO if the ICC don't throw the book at these fuckwits the game has just written its death notice.
Yeah reactionary post from me, apologies. It's just that I find this stuff just shiity and don't want to climb into it in a jingoistic way - not pointed at you or any others on here for that matter.
Anyway, to address your more salient point, yeah the ICC really must make some examples here. Poor bloody Bancroft is likely gone but there needs to be some senior heads on the block here too.
