Boult, Southee and Wagner are ranked 6,12 and 4 on the all time NZ averages.
In 1973 we had a lineup of Hadlle, Collinge, Bruce Taylor (supported by Dayle Hadlee and Congdon). Hadlee was only starting out but on the all-time list these guys are ranked 2, 7 and 3
Nash, Doull and Cairns are up there when you look at it this way as well. 5,8 and 9
Just a shame that Bond never had any backup.
2001-2 in Oz Bond, Martin, Cairns, Vettori with Astle as 4th seamer would be up there with current attack and the one from early mid 70's as our best ever. Nash and O'Connor were also in the squad.
That team also had a reasonable batting line up but I'd say for consistency the one from the mid 80's is our best ever. The team that won the second test at Trent Bridge had 8 guys with test centuries to their name
Rigor,
On paper that bowling looks shit hot but Bond was still learning, rocked it in the ODIs but his test bowling took a while to develop. Cold play wasn’t at his best then either

Tore it up in the Odis but took a while from memory in tests, certainly in that test series anyway

@mn5 no Ish either. A bit odd as it looks like he's got enough ingredients to be developed. Thought having him in the squad would help that but I assume they're helping him work on his game.
Larsen said they wanted to be loyal to Astle as he was picked in India before getting injured, and deserves a chance. Ish will be in the T20 squad.
Guptill is still not 100% but is close. No mention of either Anderson or Neesham in response to questions.
Latham will be the captain in games 2 and 3.

Shit that's a serious fall from grace for Jimmy and Corey ( assuming both are fit ? )

so usually only have a handful of runs to knock off if they're batting 4th.
Not following you there? These are the highest chases so the over 300's, etc in the fourth innings and a lot of them won the game with only 4 or 5 down. As I said how many more would they have made if the match wasn't over?
So yes, agree that stats don't tell the whole story about run chases. Time remaining is also a factor that isn't covered in the stats.
Just talking about tests, in general. When e.g. Oz plays Zimbabwe, they're not going to get a chance to make any sort of substantive 4th innings score.

Satnav gets the last two with consecutive balls to improve his test average.
Timmy won't be amused when he reviews the previous over. He got smacked for two sixes and change, but one of the other balls brushed the toe end of the bat and was caught behind, but not given and not reviewed.
-
seriously noncompetitive start to the Australasian cricketing summer
-
I'm not 100% convinced the ball did hit the bat, or that there was evidence to give the batsmen out. The big white mark on hotspot was from the bat hitting the ground.
NZ did as expected in this series, winning 2-0 with neither test going into the 5th day. The Windies will be much better in the short-forms.
