Whiny Warren Gatland
-
It's hard to say, because Gatland was such a great Waikato man in terms of playing, but fuck he's a dick as a coach. He never misses an opportunity nowadays to spit bile about the ABs, and every time he comes across as a complete fuckwit.
And if the only way he can get airtime about his book is claiming explosive news about the ABs, then he has a shit PR firm or it is a really lame offering.
-
What a knob. A real pity that he feels such a chip on his shoulder. Can't see how this sort of carry on will ever get him a super rugby gig. Let alone a role with the ABs.

He should be consigned to the Robbie Deans memorial dustbin for coaches who behaved in a manner unbecoming of a future AB coach

I would think that he's well aware that that particular ship sailed a long time ago.

He should be. But self awareness doesn't seem to be one of his strong points...

He's been up here 10 years or so ... spitting bile and whinging about the ABs is a pastime, of which the Taffs are right at the forefront.
The thing that makes me laugh though, is the reporters who cover it, sitting on some moral soapbox whilst their own columns on the ABs are forever nasty, full of shit and sometimes rather personal as well.
And to think the King of all this shit says Kiwis don't get irony ...

The money is probably better there and the KPIs are lower
-
@booboo you have to wonder aye. Unless he thinks Tew and NZ management will have cleared out by 2019 or whenever he's off contract! For a guy that likes to frame himself as a straight shooter and not into the scuttlebutt etc...yeah right buddy

Still, I'd take a little less money for the honour of coaching the ABs. I reckon Warren would too

@canefan fuck that! It's a no win job.
We win 99.9% of the games we play, and still the coaches get a whack from the public if we don't look like the personification of perfect rugby played by aggressive angels.
Lose? Hatchet jobs. Just win? Not god enough what are the coaches/selectors doing. Win by a shit load? Well, we just expect that.
I would take a high paying job where every success is celebrated, and winning more than you lose is brilliant.

@mariner4life winning ugly is not acceptable anymore

I'm not a Gatland hater.
But I'm starting to find it all quite bizarre.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/99076442/warren-gatland-backtracks-on-accusations-of-explosive-info-on-the-all-blacks "Explosive is a pretty exaggerated word," he said of his own description. "I said I'd known things about the All Blacks and how personal some of the attacks on me were, that if it needed to get dirty, I'd reveal a little bit of stuff.
It's not the first time I've heard this, about it getting too personal. About his son etc. Maybe I also heard this on Reunion from JK.
I gave up on the Herald during that tour, so maybe I missed some?
What happened?
- Gats got a clown cartoon a year before the tour when he white knighted on Cheika getting the clown treatment.
- I remember articles about Bryn playing his Dad's team, but they were all warm fuzzy feel-good stories that I read.
- Press started going on about "Warren-ball" after Lions scored 2 tries in first 3 games of the tour IIRC. Gats lost his rag in a press conference but I think it was with British media? I actually felt at that point a limited 'warrenball' style was a good approach for a scratch tour team so I found the kiwi criticism of the style irritiating. But it wasn't an NZ 'thing'.
- Gatland did ref-grooming via the press about obstructing kick chasers. NZ crowds reacted negatively to this. Can't remember any particular media thing.
- Gatland accused ABs of foul play after first test. Media came to NZ defence. I think at this point Hansen got cross with Gats. also I think this is when he got clown-cartooned again.
Then we had the 'Geography 6' thing, that touring press got in a froth about. NZ media and fans didn't appear to give 2 shits.
I don't get it.
At the end of the series I was quite pleased for Gats, and felt he should feel a bit justified. My Kiwi hackles were raised a bit about his treatment (for years) by British and Irish media. I thought he did a good job, got some luck, but in the end his approach was justified.
What have I missed? I stopped reading the Herald as I was finding them a bit juvenile. I haven't been back. I already didn't read any of Rattue or Reason.
It's not just Gats being paranoid though. My foreign press reading is via The Guardian. They mention 'hostile press' etc like touring a country with 2 newspaper organisations is a trip into psychological warfare land.

@rapido trying to sell a book!
Yeah I get that bit.
It's the "how personal" part I've found most strange. I never saw that, but I'm not ruling it out as I say above I've now excluded a reasonable amount of the NZ sports media from my vision. I also don't watch TV news for a few years, not out of any boycott. It's just on at a bad time if you have a young family, a bit shit anyway, and full of adds. But the NZ sports media is soooooo small.
2 newspaper companies.
3 TV companies (1 of which Sky / Prime is quite respectful of its product.
3 radio organisations.I just find it really strange how the whole UK/Irish press seem to have bought into the 'hostile environment' thing. These are people from the land of about 12 or more Daily newspapers. free-to-air sports radio channels etc, plus a normal amount to TV companies. All pouring out content. Touring the UK takes only 1 troll or ignoramous a day from each fo the 20 odd independent media outlets for it to feel like you are touring a place that hates you.
And I'm not just talking about Gatland feeling sensitive. This "hostility" thing, it's in the articles, the podcasts etc leading up to the Lions tour that I read and listed to as I hurriedly did my pre-tour swotting up. I think it's a bit of self-fulfilling myth making. The old lady in the shop or the waitress giving Will Carling or 'Insert Lion Here' her take on the lineout/scrum problems etc. The burden of touring a rugby mad country. Even if that rugby mad country IMO has a small press and IMO not particularly fervent population.
-
I think the comments around Bryn were read into too much, and as its his son he took them to heart, then the clown thing I guess his view is that this was instigated by NZR rather than the ferald doing it on thier own.
Otherwise yeah all odd but somewhat of his own making.
Funny how he is going back on his 'explosive' comments

Depends if he realistically wants to win a WC. If so, ABs it is.
