Re: the Shields poach. It will be quite interesting either way it goes.
I really think Eddie Jones has awful man-management abilities.
He's:
- embarassing Shields by talk of parachuting him in so early above encumbents and fringe payers.
- Creating a potential rift between Shields and his future teammates competing for his position.
- He's alienated those same fringe players from trusting in the coaching staff.
- He's embarassing his CEO, who last year went public about getting IRB help to stop celtic countries poaching RFU academey 'products' etc
- He's potentially embarassing his CEO even further if it all comes to nought if the NZRU a. dig their heals in and b. the section 9.38 actually holds water. Public embrassment and political capital expended.
Quoting myself ......
Way back, I made this post about Eddie's man-management abilities.
I kind of equate him with Richard Hadlee and Glenn Turner when they had any posts in NZ Cricket that required them to understand how 'normal' human being's minds worked.
In particular the bolded part about creating a rift about Shields, a foreigner, just outside waltzing in. Thinking how awkward it might be once the first loose-forward injury replacement joins the squad. Well, that already happened after Eddie's training sessions.
Nathan Hughes joined the squad.
From what I've read the unlucky ones now after Hughes were Dan Armand and Jono Ross. A Zim-born Saffa and a Saffa.
So the 'slighted parties' from Brad's rapid elevation are a Fijian, and 2 Saffas. So, actually I think they won't resent Brad that much. There will be an understanding.
Edit:
Upon further though: Although I suppose the tension might come of Shield's is elevated above others into the starting 15. Actuially, yeah, I still think Eddie's a bit mad.Edit, Edit: ....
But, then, surely he won't go into the starting XV? He's been playing for the Hurricanes while the rest of England have been in camp for 2 weeks, he'll be way behind the eight ball. -
@rapido For all that, the bit that confuses me the most is what does Shields bring that England are missing?

Mini aura by association?

Well, that comes under the "Eddie's a bit mad".

a) love of a sheep
b) uproarious sing-songs
c) sense of humour
d) empty bank account
e) English-born parents
f) another winning Kiwi captain
g) Someone who can understand EJ’s accent
h) love of another sheep
i) someone who isn’t knackered by the Premiership before playing test rugby
j) someone who’s played with an actual RWC winner... -
I read somewhere yesterday that both Jason Woodward and Brad Shields played for the same junior club. Not sure which? Need input from one of our Hutt Valley specialists.
Shields was a Stoke Valley boy who played prem for Petone, Jason Woodward played prem for Upper Hutt.

@toddy should've said to ask you! Anytime Snakes Gulley is mentioned it always brings back pleasant memories of the one armed prop.
I've heard of one armed drummers in shitty 80s bands but a one armed prop? Tell me more...
-
@bones I've played against him. Even got punched in the head by his good arm... I'll get my coat

Sounds more like a bad arm to me

Toasters?
-
@mn5 @Paekakboyz I've mentioned it a few times before, broken record but... the pleasant memory is of the first scrum and the ref calling them to engage, our prop yelling "he's not binding ref!". Pure gold.

Gibbes to Waikato, Gibbes to La Rochelle and not to Waikato, Gibbes to Waikato and not to La Rochelle, my goodness, they've finally made up their mind!
Jono Gibbes has been appointed the "Directeur Sportif" of La Rochelle for the next four seasons from November 2018. So it looks like he will coach Waikato first this season and then head off to France.
From what I understand from the media release, Gibbes insisted on honouring his commitment to Waikato (and resolving some family issues while in NZ).
-
If Gibbes signed a 2-yr contract with Ulster until the 2019/20 season and then released him on compassionate grounds to return to NZ they would be perfectly within their rights to insist he can't then sign a contract with another European club.

Yep. Not a good look from Gibbes. Refused to talk to media when the La Rochelle news leaked whilst he was at Ulster saying he was returning to NZ for family reasons.
In short, a load of bollocks.

Julian Savea joins french club Toulon on a 2-year deal.

Sad end to a once great ab, but should free up some an cash too
-
@machpants Might give the Hurricanes enough to sign the Ioanes.

Reading that article, Julian Savea hasn't signed yet, but they expect him to sign him "in the hours to come". The deadline for signings is apparently on Friday.
I'm not sure why it would be a "sad end to a once great ab". He's had a great AB career and is now going to cash in. His career isn't over yet; it's just not continuing here in NZ. It's sad for his fans in NZ, but not for him. Every AB career ends at some point, but he's had a pretty decent number of caps and a World Cup medal.

If he delays any longer it will hurt his value. A couple of years in Toulon, another NH contract and maybe a couple in Japan to finish will set him up for life

Good for him, he has been great for the AB's and Canes.
But he is struggling to make the Canes starting 15, let alone the AB's. Why would you not cash in? -
yeah bit sad about Jules , but bloody good international career , nothing to be ashamed of there ,
meanwhile our production like of great 11s rolls on with Reiko.

You should write for the Herald
-
Yeah sad for me, I guess if he'd finished at rwc15 after smashing the French it'd be fitting. But just being on the fringe but not really in the squad, and mucking up the third lions test is what makes it a sad end.
-
I fucken loved Jules during his time in black. That warm glow that one of our wingers could and would get us 5 points from seemingly nothing, ( the Caleb Ralph day's still scar).
So it's hard not to feel anything but well done, thanks and good luck le bus.

In his prime he was the closest thing to Jonah that I've seen
-
This is one of the few occasions when I'm happy to read something on the Exodus thread.
Not meaning any disrespect, Julian goes down as an All Black great.
But this is a good move for all parties.
-
The curse of the All Black 40+ try scoring greats continues. ( not to mention the tradition of outside backs who’s career is over at 26/27)

Second place behind nadolo in my opinion

I was thinking the same. Howlett's AB try-scoring record looks to be safe for a while yet.
