Id take Gatland in a heartbeat. He'd have enough sway where he could buy in into his vision and the changes required.

    Gatland would bring:

    • Credibility
    • Standards
    • Coaching nous
    • Discipline

    What's not to like?

Edit: Also, i suspect he doesn't jump into burning dumpsters like the Blues though...

Also excessive twatishness - remember how he got on the Lions tour?

    On a related point..

How many friends does Gatland have at the NZRU? How many does Umaga have? I suspect thats more important than pesky rugby reasons

Personally I would much rather have a competent disliked coach.

Who did you want, that would have applied, when Umaga was appointed?

Did Pivac apply, I can't remember that far back. Weird that he's never had a shot at the Blues though.

Yes, the coaching appointments can be political. I've heard a few stories about coaches missing out on positions based on the word of other connected coaches.

Was it advertised? I can't remember.. I think the board gave up on Matson/Kirwan when Umaga was interested

Pivac applied a lot though. He doesn't have the right friends.

@duluth It was always a mystery as to why Pivac never got an opportunity. Sums up our organisation when far inferior appointments have been made.

Sigh. Scanned twitter to see if Tana had quit.

    Nope.

Sorry, I was unclear. I don't want Gatland for the ABs.

The Blues would be mental to not take him.

Looks like Kieran Keane is going to be looking for a job.

You could sign him for a year with the carrot if he shows evident improvement he'll be signed for more time and if he doesn't he's replaced by Gatland.

He's a prickly customer - not afraid to rub people the wrong way. Not one of NZR's favourite sons!

On the other hand, his style doesn't seem to have worked very well at Connacht.

Sound like Henry. Maybe we need another headmaster type.

    @kirwan

Similar type - pretty grumpy, but apparently a mentor of Wayne Smith in his early days.

Would be a change from celebrity coaches.... 🙂

Here's an article that lays out his "manifesto".

I wonder if Rieko has been given an exemption to the 2 week rest/stand down for ABs prior to the June series given the Blues fortunes/injury issues?

@machpants Not the same thing. Chiefs are sending their players home because there is one of these AB camps this weekend (I think this Chiefs-Sharks game is one of the only Super games that clashes with an AB camp - with the other camps/teams I think its about players missing Super training not Super games).

I'm talking about the 2 games period that the ABs need to have - there's conflicting information on which ABs this applies to and whether this is before the June French series or can be done after.
