Pretty exciting team. Sux that Coles isn't fit.

Surprised but not surprised about the Rieko vs Savea selection. Hopefully Rieko goes well like he did for the Blues. Glad he got in agead of Naholo.

Surprised about the midfield. Didn't think it would be ALB who missed out if SBW was going to start.

I think Scott Barrett on the bench ahead of Romano will add to the "ball playing" ability of the reserves. Romano isn't bad but his one trick seems to be a midfield hit up. Not that effective against this Lions team.

Ine thing that hasn't been mention much is A Smith
claiming the starting 9 spot. I guess the Samoa game signalled it but 2 weeks ago plenty of people were sure it would be TJP. I think they have got it right.

@Chester-Draws why do you think SBW has the best offload in traffic? I'd say ALB, with the likes of Coles, Read, TJP and Barrett there or thereabouts.

If you offload out of traffic I believe that is called a 'pass'.

Some teams struggle with this though.

    SBW doesn't pass, he offloads.

    And not half as useful.

The Crusaders passed and passed and it achieved little. Luatua and SBW take it to the line, get the man running on at pace some room by passing behind the defenders (a.k.a. offloading) and the game was won.

So I'll stick with offloading being a more useful skill.

And if you don't think SBW is better at it than most others, then nothing I say will convince you. It really doesn't matter if Coles (really, Coles???) is better at it, he's not playing in the centres.

Easy tiger. It's @Bones you need to have a go at, not me.

Oh so it's only the best offload in traffic for someone playing in the centres, I missed that qualification. Still heavily debatable...

Have been flicking through this thread under the fog of alcohol. Are the SBW knockers questioning his big game credentials?

Watch the Blues vs Lions game again and realise that he put in the best midfield performance of the year.

Follow up by examining why "but Steve would pick my player" is no longer valid. Follow with a lament for Rob Thompson.

Finally just chill and realise that the ABs selected the best player in the country, as they usually do.

@Tim I don't think anyone's knocking SBW. It seems Chester has a huge problem with Crotty being selected though.

He keeps referring to the Lions/Crusaders game for some reason. I don't know why given Crotty wasn't even playing.

I certainly haven't knocked Williams. I don't really think you need to knock players to promote another's abilities...

My take on the Barrett selection is that there's proabbaly a strong likelihood that our two frontline locks will play 80, Barrett could replace Kaino in the second half and Ardie for Cane.

Romano is very effective at shifting bodies at the ruck which is still needed late in the game.

This thread has got weird - this is what happens when Hansen goes all quiet before a big test - send in the clowns.

Despite best attempts to argue about selections, this Hansen fella really doesn't give us much.

If only Mark Ranby was selected....

Maybe this is one for the Palmerston North thread ( @PN ) but I saw Basil Brush at the Regent Theatre when he toured NZ 🙂

Basil was a Saturday tradition for me growing up. Club rugby in the mornings; rep rugby in the afternoon; then home to eat din-dins watching Baz early evening. I fuckin' love that guy.

I don't get the Naholo angst. Until he strings 3 games together where he doesn't make at least 1 major blunder he is not yet the man. If NZ lose the first test he'll be right back into the equation though.

As for Romano/Barrett. Barrett is just a better rugby player.

I'm undecided about Crotty vs ALB. Saturday should help me decide.

The AB back three should be much better under the high ball than some of the efforts we have seen recently (Bridge, Lowe etc)

Probably the main difference between SBW and the other two midfielders in attack , is his preference to pass the ball after he has made contact rather than before ,

Whether that is effective in breaking up their defense , I guess we find out saturday
