although i did see someone suggest last week BB playing 10 on the "internaitonal rugby" facebook group and there were a stack of comments along the lines of "god no"

Ardie has been absolutely awesome for us in black at 8, not our best ever but right up there. As @Bovidae points out we get the best of his strengths when we play him there as he has such a strong running game and gets to carry a lot more. The same reason Sotutu and Sititi go well there too.
It's a shame Ardie's form has dropped off this year as he was huge in the RWC, nearly carried us over the line in the final by himself. Moving him to 7 makes no sense as he'd become the third best 7 in the squad, but using him as a closer off the bench would be perfect at this stage of his career and would make our 23 so much stronger. I'm annoyed that the bench is still seen as a demotion in NZ instead of an opportunity to give yourself a seriously strong 23 by bringing class players with fresh legs off the bench to close the match out.
Cane is still a good player, and Paps was playing well before injury and seemingly losing his spot as a result (he is from the Blues so no surprise there I guess). Lakai looks a real talent for the future, the coaches had better fucking take him on the EOYT (I have no faith in these coaches selections). So I think we are already well served at 7.

I think many of us have agreed for a long time that Ardie's best position is on the bench.
My feeling is that the coaches could change the view of the bench by using it for some players similar to the way the Boks use theirs.
Bring a player on at minute 35, show that being on the bench is about assessing the game situation and making a positive difference.
These guys give their bench piss all time, so no matter how many times we suggest it, the players aren't thick - ten minutes at the end of the game when there is fuck all time to make an impact is very much a second tier position.
It's up to the coaches to address.

Yes, it is almost ironic the loosies are all 6.5 players but the one player who plays at least 2 of the positions at international standard and the third passably, and can be a dynamic ball carrier and is a decent distributor isn't picked for the bench.

I agree with all the bench stuff, but disagree that we are well served at 7. Cane a great servant but past his best and slow, and I don't think ever a contender for a world XV. Dalton is solid, but he's nowhere near making a world XV - and when you look at the history of the black 7, that's what we want.
If you want to be the best team in the world, you need players who are close to the best in their position in the world.
Lakai I hope so, but he hasn't even played a test so to mention him in an argument that we're well served at test level is a big stretch.The other thing is the way Ardie plays. On defence he's not a hitter, he's a scragger (Kronfeld not Zinzan). And on attack he's not a power runner like Kieran Read or even Harry Wilson / Valentini / Sititi. He is very powerful post-contact. It looks (and is) impressive, and it can be very valuable in defensive positions where an extra few metres to make a clearance is valuable and you don't need speed, but it kills momentum on attack because the time he takes to hit, get the leg drive going, power on 2 metres, then go to ground, then the ball is wrapped up in 3 players and comes out slow... it just kills our ruck speed and the defence can re-align. Of the experienced guys, I do think he's the one with the temperament and ability to make a big play to win a game - he regularly steps up with turnovers late in games.
