Prefer a test like that than a stroll in the park vs Tonga!
Aside from either side of halftime when we played dumb rugby that was pretty good. England played bloody well but so did we generally. Subs were made at the right time. For a first game in charge against a team that came to win I’ll take that.
I was very happy about the subbing, previous era was far too often rigid, late, and conservative IMO.

A Bok-style one point win.
I could get used to those. 😎

I thought Perofeta had a really good game. Composed, dangerous with pill in hand and excellent decison-making.
I've made no secret of the fact that I don't see Ioane as a 13. I will concede he did well at the RWC last year but last night seemed to involve himself more in a way that didn't suit his skillset, i.e. distribution, linking. I'd obviously prefer him at wing but if he's going to be 13 then he has to stay in his lane so to speak.
Oh yes, and Jordie is a 12. And a pretty fůcking good one.

One thing I would add, and maybe this is because the ref was Georgian, but that test actually flowed. They didn't review every single farking tackle or movement. I felt I actually watched a game of rugby and not the stop-start-review trash from recent years.

LOL new season and some things never change. Tim wanking on about how amazeballs papali’i is and how everyone else is useless. Don’t change Tim!
It must be so hard for Papalii to lift himself when he’s surrounded by such mediocrity

@Victor-Meldrew if Dmac had nailed his we would have won by more
If, but, maybe
Why is this forum so negative
England are a GOOD TEAMThe negativity is always there in the match threads and they're often entertaining when you read them the next day already knowing the outcome. That's often part of the fun of this place. We all say something silly in the heat of the moment in a match thread.
But, this may have been the worst one ever, it seemed to just be filled with posters complaining about players or hyping players based on franchise preference.
If we run the AI for this thread it will likely say every player was both shit and awesome.

Some interesting ratings as is often the case. I think Reece deserved a 9 and not quite sure how Vaa’i got 7 and Aumua only 6 ?
Overall one would think the ABs won by more than a solitary point.
-
I didn't notice much comment on Jacobson- he had 3 tackles in 19 minutes? But I didn't see much of him after the first 2 or 3 minutes of his cameo..

I'm not a Canes supporter but I thought the team lifted its urgency when he (Aumua) came on. But Vaa'i was more dynamic than I was expecting.

Not sure how much was him and how much was the players but was nice after a test to be not talking about cards as well

Fucking laughable rankings. Ardie rated higher than Jordie? Marcus Smith a better game than Furbank? What game did this fuckwit Winston Aldworth watch?

@Old-Samurai-Jack it seemed like a lot of stuff we complain about, team going wide, before forcing oppostion back.
Scrum was good, and there were no cards.
Nick Berry is ref next week.
I’m willing to put a Charles Barkley guaranteeee on there being a card with ol mate on the whistle. He’s like a dealer at the casino.

I think we all agree the loose trio is still looking unsettled. But during the last era and possibly this one we are still undecided on the best trio.
Who is we?
It was very clear in the 18 months leading up to the RWC that in the minds of the selectors our top trio was Frizell, Cane and Savea.
Two of those currently unavailable so back to the drawing board.

Yep a complete idiot Aldworth didn't even understand want he was watching.

If I had sum up match from ABs in a sentnce,I would say to me they perhaps looked like a team with too many coaches.
Though I think they will settle in when I was watching (maybe because it was something I knew), I kept thinking it looked like the backline were all playing kind of well in seprate pods without really looking likely to flow at any stage? Pretty skittery I thought.
Though am quite happy that with more time they will iron it out. -

Very pleased to get the win - 10 days in camp with a rebuild squad - I was very apprehensive about this game.
Unavailable from the 23 that played in the final 6 months ago - Retallick, Frizell, Cane, Smith, Mo'unga, Jordan, Taukei'aho, Laulala, Whitelock - plus squaddies Coles, Roigard and Fainga'anuku.
That's a shitload of depth to have to replace.
Not surprised that we didn't see too much in the way of a discernable new pattern. Have to be very careful about downloading too much new stuff in 10 days.
Get through these three games - then we've got three weeks before the Rugby Championship - I'd hope to see some significant new stuff emerging as we progress through that.
A baseline performance put down - lots to work on this week - and, importantly, a win!
