I made a comment before that game about complacency but I actually think it was more of a freeze/choke.

Canes just didn’t want the ball until it was too late.

My view is the coaches lost the plot with selections after about the half way point

Until then their selections were spot on.

Examples They had Viljoen and Higgins both starting and playing very well. Later they were nowhere to be seen. The limited Sullivan and Judd were preferred. Sullivan is very limited but maybe he has good leadership qualities. Like Blackwell and Prinsep. But I hoped this rubbish was in the past.

And other poor selections. Moorby completely lost interest after he signed elsewhere (until then he looked AB quality). He should have been dropped completely. Iose was another one who completely lost form. But they dropped Flanders to the reserves who was just hitting great form and brought Shields back who was just recovering from injury. So, 2 out of three were out of form in the semi.

The biggest issue was not addressing 1st 5. They never even tried even when it was obvious Cameron was just not good enough.

The coaches were much better than the useless top two coaches last year (Holland and Gibbes) but later in the year they lost it. Selections were bordering on Blackwell like. Including having short replacement locks in one game

I hope Laidlaw is able to see this. To see what happened to go so badly off track. Including an idiotic game plan in the semi. If he can do this and find a good replacement backs coach, they have the players to win next year. Otherwise, they will continue to just make up the numbers.

Game plan was flawed, no doubt. We kicked too much ball away, we were overly-expansive instead of keeping it tight and trying to wear the Chiefs down up front. But a very good year for a young team, the Chiefs just showed their quality when it mattered

It's not a young super rugby team anymore.

And going out in this way in the semis, at home, with a team that's easily good enough to win it, is not a very good year. I would say it's a disappointing year.

It's started off looking so good then, due in large part to poor selections, fizzled out badly

A few players would have either played their way out of the ABs yesterday ,or at the very least now have big question marks next to their names..

By that reckoning have all the Crusaders played their way out of the ABs this season? After all they were unable to not choke in the round robin games and didn't make the big games. 😉

No as they didn't choke in the finals again this year they are at the front of selections as always.

It’s still a young team. Take Shields and Perenara out and it’s a young side with plenty of experience. Plenty of years to keep the core of these players together and build on this, we will only get better. We just need a good ten to partner Roigard in the halves because Cameron showed last night how absolutely limited he is. Cameron’s inability to counter attack is a big issue because every time he drops back he’s far too predictable. Like many sides, the Canes need to recruit well in the off-season to fill the gaps they have. We’ve already signed 90% of our squad so we need a to make sure the last 10% are all quality players.

The season ended in a disappointing way but overall it wasn’t a disappointing season. This Canes side has made huge strides since last year and have created a good foundation to build on. We topped the regular season points table and we were one win away from a competing for a title. At the start of the year many people didn’t have the Canes in the top four so they’ve exceeded expectations. Next year will be a different story, they’ll be one of the favourites to win the title from the outset so anything but a title next year will be a disappointment.

Perhaps Laidlaw should have promoted Godfrey earlier, seeing his potential, and used Cameron as the fall-back option.

Cameron was another who was promoted as an AB option. He showed (again) he's not even close. At best he a backup super rugby 1st

TJ might be another as a starting option. He was just not good enough. Even his defense badly let him down at times.

    On the plus side

Numia was missed. PRS is not even close. The gap surprised me
Proctor was quality as was Aumua
    Love did enough. Just
Barrett was poorish in the first half but really stepped up in the 2nd
    Lakai was good again.

Also, Flanders was a big improvement over Shields, And much better also then Iose,

Rueben Love may have a question mark not his best last few weeks probably down to carrying that injury which may have hurt him.

    Perenara not a great game.

    Those stand out to me.

    on the reverse side
    Sititi pushed his case
D Mac,Lienart -Brown,Narawa,Finau all confirmed their case for selection.

Proctor pushed his case again, Lakai even though his missed a couple of tackles is the same for me.

Amua was solid even Walker-Leware is worth a look, a big unit I thought in a losing side he went well.

You could be right if they only pick 5 LFs he may miss out.

Yeah I have been watching Love closely the last few weeks and I am convinced his knee is bothering him quite a bit. He seems to have lost a little pace and if he goes on a run involving stepping or swerving he gets up hobbling. Shame for the young fella. If he does get picked it wouldn't surprise me to see him on the injury list initially.

None of the Canes covered themselves in glory yesterday, but one bad game does not make them bad players. I don't think a wise coach can ignore the entire body of work. Lakai and Love have time on their side. If they miss out so be it. Proctor has a stronger case

If Razor can work some of his motivation magic on IWL, that'll be great.

then it would be better he rests his knee than risk making it worse.
    Knee injuries can be diabolical.
