@Mr-Fish Perenara is our best option atm. Last thing you want to do is throw a full on rookie into the fray when the All Blacks are starting a new era. Perenara will start until Roigard comes back and then I expect Perenara to be the impact halfback after that with Ratima or Funaki getting he odd mins here and there.

Steve Hansen handed Aaron Smith the starting jersey in 2012 on his Test debut and the All Blacks never looked back. Robertson should be looking to do something similar.

Perenara isn't a better player now than be was two years ago and two years ago he was a handbreak for the l Blacks' attack.

I understand the arguments for starting Perenara, I just think picking a good halfback is more important than picking an experienced halfback.

When Christie is a potential alternative I think Perenara is a very compelling option.

@Frank not sure when expected back but he was initially out for 6 months. My understanding is he will be available well before that timeframe.

I don't expect him to be 100% for some time. I don't have any clinical basis for this, but it's a serious injury and it has to take a while to come back

Perenara is a good option and an experienced option. Perenara has been in fine form, not sure who you’ve been watching if you think he isn’t out top halfback atm. His pass has been a bit shaper than a couple years ago aswell in my view. A big reason is his fitness, the silver lining of spending so long on the sidelines is was he was able to spend time working on improving his skillset aswell as getting into the best shape of his life.

Whilst there are some good young halfbacks coming through none are quite as demanding of selection as Smith was in 2012 (in terms of 9s yet to be capped). Roigard if fit would be the 9.

Ratima-DMac combo must have some appeal though. Be interesting to see which 9 really puts their hand up in the business end of Super. I've got a sinking feeling Funaki is going to have to sit behind Chrstie.

Much better! He was going through a serious dip in form a few years ago.

Yeah TJP seems to have better control and a calmer less unpredictable approach. Passing isn’t too bad these days but his service has never been lightning quick.

I like what I see and with the other options being far less uncertain and not screaming pick me, there is an excellent case for TJP.

The other chances are Ratima and Fakatava.

    Fakatava

I just can't see the draw, Funaki's all round game and vein of form mean it would be a horrible decision to not get him in black.

If Perenara is selected to start at 9, there's zero doubt in my mind that everyone on here will be complaining endlessly when he's inevitably giving the backline terrible service in July.

Assuming all but Roigard fit, starting 9 will be between Christie and TJ. In which event for me third 9 between Ratima and Funaki.

If Christie out I’d plump for Ratima to start with TJ on bench. I’m which case Fakatava must come into mix.

Huge claim but at least one we'll get to see proved wrong.

Fakatava should be nowhere near the All Blacks, for every cool no look pass there is half a dozen bad decisions and shitty passes.

Seems to be mentally hungry as well, it appears when injured he had one focus and that was to become a better 9 than he was. To me it appears he has been successful and the fact he is in the race speaks volumes of his dedication.

Is Tavatavanawai eligible ? He has qualities that most other wings don't have. He is the best jackal in NZ and a strong battering ram. Not sure about his speed, his catching of high balls and his kicking, though.

@cgrant he's good under the high ball (althought more of a catch on the run rather than out leap everyone else) and passable kicker, think he's only played U20s for fiji

We're flush with quality wingers though, Clarke, Telea, Reece, Narawa.

I'd feel a little sorry for Reece if he doesn't get into the squad, top try scorer in the comp playing for a team at the bottom of the table - its quite an effort.

He's been very good for some time. I think the AB selectors may see him as too small; I disagree - I'd ahve him on the wing ahead of Jordan (for instance)
