Cruden does not seem like a great impact player, TJ seems to struggle when he comes on off the bench but the worst is Savea J. I see absolutely no point in having him off the bench or him being in the 23 man squad when he is so off form.

Tend to disagree with the above. There's no reason Cruden can't be an awesome impact player. Admittedly he can only play first five... but after most of a game observing and looking for holes to exploit, he could be fantastic with his running at the line and bringing the backline in. It's not like Sopoaga towers over him as an impact player anyway.

You have to reward that form TJP has shown leading his team to a Super Rugby title and give him the opportunity to show he has matured as a player... something he's earned by showing that at a Super Rugby level at least.

As for Savea, well, I guess they either leave him for the NPC on or give him opportunities off the bench. They've chosen to try and play him into form. I don't actually think they have any more back cover in the squad anyway, do they?

ALB and Sopaga would be the only other options in the squad.

I get the selection though, I disagree with those who say Savea is out of form and shouldn't be picked. His form on the bench during the final was undeniable; incredible posture for the full 70 minutes before being getting on the field, he clapped at all the right times and provided excellent head rubs and pats on the back to players being subbed off. It's a 23 man game these days and I didn't see anyone else doing the kind of work Jules did on the pine (in a big match environment too).

Naholo was terrible when he went into the midfield in that test. Having J Savea on the bench really limits your options as it's easier to manufacture a winger than put someone into the midfield. B Smith is the only option.

I'm surprised that Squire gets picked ahead of Pat T. I expect both locks to play the full 80.

Congratulations to Kane Hames who is one of those guys who impressed every time he plays. The first cap of many from him, I suspect.

Decent looking starting line up and lots of potential impact of the bench, especially the Savea boys. Only risk would be if we lose a lock or a midfield player in the first half hour.

So starting by super rugby team

Crusaders 6

H/Landers 4

Cheifs 3

Blues Canes 1 each

You would think the Canes were the worst team based of these numbers. And the Crusaders easily the best

(I wonder where the head coach hails from)

am sure I have heard this story before....

I wonder if we should change the team every year based on the Super rugby results, those rookies Dagg, Whitelock, Read, Franks and Crockett all there because of the coaches bias towards the Crusaders and should be dropped for their Hurricane opposites.

Super Rugby is nothing like test footy, the ABs outrageous success in the past 13 years has been based on selecting guys that are proven performers at test level, not chucking a bunch of rookies who played well in Super rugby into the team in the hope they'll step up.

All I'm pointing out is it does seem a little strange that the Crusaders have so many. including the very average Crotty and Dagg. whereas the top team can only mange 1. I'm sure if the opposite happened to the winning Crusaders with a Canes head coach you would wonder a bit. Maybe the head coach is selecting based on provincial loyalties

so are you actually suggesting that Marshall and Halaholo should be starting over Dagg & Crotty, cos that's the tone of your post, that the canes should be better represented and those 2 names you have pulled out!

Stoked with the team, excited to see Barrett back and TJP rewarded for an excellent end of season. I have faith Crotty and Fekitoa will gel and I'm still hoping for that one break-out game from Naholo when errors are replaced with amazing tries. I'm supposed to be going to a concert saturday night but now that Barrett is starting I reckon I'll duck out and find pub for a couple hours rather than watch it delayed.

On Grizz - he had a nearly 90% winning record with the ABs - a better winning percentage than Sir Graham Henry.

He revolutionized rugby conditioning in New Zealand, by bringing Jim Blair into the Canterbury set-up - Blair and Grizz developed the grid passing drill that is still used today. Together they helped Canterbury to a record equaling Ranfurly Shield tenure. Hart stole Blair to help create the greate Auckland team of the 80s.

Hart and Grizz were Lochore's assistants in 1987 RWC.

People who played their first class rugby in Grizz's Canterbury squads and later became successful coaches themselves - Steve Hansen, Wayne Smith, Robbie Deans, Kieran Keane.

There is an enormous diaspora of Canterbury coaches throughout the world who trace directly back to Wyllie.
