@Winger There was that guy who there was similar talk about from BOP a few years ago, I've forgotten his name, but he went to the Drua and then was snapped up by the French. NZ produce so many outside backs, and this guy wasn't even in the NZ U20s. The next two All Black wingers who haven't debuted are probably Tangitau and Springer... maybe Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens if he can click for the Landers.

He was playing center in the twitter post below. Unsure if this is his usual position or not. But not a position of strength in the ABs

Lee seems to blame Clarke. Stupid comment regardless by Lee. Or maybe Clarke is struggling. He better not because Ellison. My view is as hard as it was to let him go it was the right decision. Time to move on to other options

    https://www.msn.com/en-nz/news/other/julian-savea-contract-negotiations-not-as-good-as-they-should-have-been-hurricanes-chief-executive-avan-lee-says/ar-AA1g7YdA?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=ef99114a83d34afba9042b7e94e1a764&ei=11

Lee shed more light on that situation this afternoon, saying discussions between the two parties “weren’t as good as they should have been” but he wished Savea all the best for the next part of his career.

Lee also noted that a change in the team’s coaching setup for 2024 – with Clark Laidlaw replacing Jason Holland as head coach - played a part in the outcome.

“There were conversations taking place between coaches and the player, and obviously that didn’t work out in Julian’s favour. It’s massively difficult to go through a process like that and see a legend of the club leaving,” Lee said.

@Winger I read that totally different and see no blaming of Clarke. More the transition from one coaching setup to the next. And if Clarke didn't want him, what's wrong with that? He may have a different vision of the future Canes.

Laidlaw is a Scotsman so naturally will not want to pay over the top wages for someone unlikely to play a great deal whilst Savea is a player that was an All Black so will want the direct opposite.

So it seems the Hurricanes have signed halfback Jordi Viljoen, lock Josh Taula and hooker Venon Bason with the Hurricanes according to this article

@Chris That could also mean they're on a NDC. Viljoen was on the first year of his NDC in 2023.

I wondered that, because signing Bason would seem a year premature.

Young players are only on a NDC for one year. Booth isn't the answer for the Canes so it would make sense if Viljoen has signed a full contract.

@Chris is Taula that dickhead that took out Love earlier in the year. Seems like someone I wouldn’t want to sign up.

@Canes4life A player does something stupid in only his second NPC game, let's write him off for good!

I'd be stunned if Bason was signed up as a hooker for this season, NZR tends to dictate at least two years out of school for front rowers.

Was also going to say, the NDC (what are we even saying this stands) contracting system differs by union/franchise. The Highlanders have had certain players on NDCs for three years, but in most cases at least two.

    And only 21 too.

Filipo would be written off for life

My view is people need a second chance. Esp for minor infractions.

I hope the Canes will give a NDC to lock Frank Lochore as well. IMO he's the MAgpies' most improved player and he's had consistent game time off the bench, this season. They may go for younger Tom Allen though.

I thought that the NDC was a NZR-paid initiative (5 players per franchise) each year, and that is different to each team signing players up to lock them in. If I look at who were the Chiefs NDC players there were 5 different players each season. One of them later signed with the Highlanders (Broughton).

@Bovidae You may be right, though that doesn't mean they've now signed full contracts. It could still be a development contract.
