@frugby If not the Canes, I think the Drua are more likely than MP if he wants to play for Fiji.
Yep, but if he wants to play for NZ, MP might be the halfway house - see Tavatavanawai.

Just noticed Epeli Waqa Nalaga was named Hurricanes U20 player of the year (https://facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1439750943121245&id=426520427777640). It is a familiar name to all Top 14 fans. He is little brother of legendary Clermont wing Napolioni Nalaga (his other older brother Inoke also made pro debut for Agen this year).

That was Jan 2023 before SR started.
I have heard the Drua are trying to sign him,I don’t think he has signed as yet.
He will end up somewhere in SR for 2024.
Maybe the Canes or Drua.I'd bet good money on Drua 24&25, before earning a fat contract in France.

If he can make the ABs then an even fatter contract. Unsure if he's good enough but looks potentially an exciting prospect from the little I have seen.

@Winger There was that guy who there was similar talk about from BOP a few years ago, I've forgotten his name, but he went to the Drua and then was snapped up by the French. NZ produce so many outside backs, and this guy wasn't even in the NZ U20s. The next two All Black wingers who haven't debuted are probably Tangitau and Springer... maybe Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens if he can click for the Landers.

He was playing center in the twitter post below. Unsure if this is his usual position or not. But not a position of strength in the ABs

Lee seems to blame Clarke. Stupid comment regardless by Lee. Or maybe Clarke is struggling. He better not because Ellison. My view is as hard as it was to let him go it was the right decision. Time to move on to other options
Lee shed more light on that situation this afternoon, saying discussions between the two parties “weren’t as good as they should have been” but he wished Savea all the best for the next part of his career.
Lee also noted that a change in the team’s coaching setup for 2024 – with Clark Laidlaw replacing Jason Holland as head coach - played a part in the outcome.
“There were conversations taking place between coaches and the player, and obviously that didn’t work out in Julian’s favour. It’s massively difficult to go through a process like that and see a legend of the club leaving,” Lee said.
-
@Winger I read that totally different and see no blaming of Clarke. More the transition from one coaching setup to the next. And if Clarke didn't want him, what's wrong with that? He may have a different vision of the future Canes.

So it seems the Hurricanes have signed halfback Jordi Viljoen, lock Josh Taula and hooker Venon Bason with the Hurricanes according to this article
-
@Stargazer said in Hurricanes 2024:
@Chris That could also mean they're on a NDC. Viljoen was on the first year of his NDC in 2023.
I wondered that, because signing Bason would seem a year premature.

Vernon or Venon

@Canes4life A player does something stupid in only his second NPC game, let's write him off for good!
-
I'd be stunned if Bason was signed up as a hooker for this season, NZR tends to dictate at least two years out of school for front rowers.
Was also going to say, the NDC (what are we even saying this stands) contracting system differs by union/franchise. The Highlanders have had certain players on NDCs for three years, but in most cases at least two.
