Operation ¼ final now. Not sure how to prepare for Uruguay in a dead rubber.

Play the same team. Build the combinations.

No need to experiment or give anyone else a run at this stage.

    Start Roigard - DMac

He's right to, we are the only top team that doesn't push hard on defence, it's so annoying that we still use a defence system from 2015.

He's right, but it's hilarious to come up with an analysis on the All Blacks defence on the 2 tries conceded when they scored 14.

It's as ridiculous as taking about the Italian offence.

Statement game. One that the ABs pull out every now and then.

Italy were OK for the first little bit, then utterly shit the bed. I can't believe how bad their set piece was. They were being shredded on a few missed tackles but also the most basic plays.

Once you let the ABs score 4 tries, things start to get really stupid.

@Machpants Not sure I’d describe the AB defence as “very passive” though. Your words were more accurate.

And what Mr Kearney didn’t mention is that some of those Ireland players are good ball players because they’re Kiwis who have come through the NZ system.

Great performance but fuck me why is our defence still so passive. Ireland thrive when they have time and space to implement their intricate attack. Take that away and they become very beatable as SA displayed last week.

We have had 4 years to at least try out a rush system, and we never did. This is a huge black mark against Foster and McLeod.

Ball in play time is not determined by the referee

It’s determined by the team who are in charge

Last night NZ were very much in charge

If NZ want the ball in play time to be greater then they have to be dominant in the basics

    It’s pretty simple really

    Yes and no.

Doesn't matter how dominant you are, when the opposition prop goes down for the 457th time and the referee allows it, the ball in play time is going to be less even if they stop the clock.

My head can't get round that maths/logic

    It's like one of those,
Train A leaves Los Angeles at 8:00 traveling at 100kph, and train B leaves NY at 9:00 traveling at 200kph
    Where do they meet?

Who'd have though six months ago Shannon Frizzell would be key to NZ's RWC progress?

And he certainly is..... I feel his development during his time at lock for the landers has added to his game - his lineout work alone puts him ahead of any of the other 6s we had been considering - let alone his physical presence which appears to be growing -

He seems to allow Ardie play better at 8 - I haven't quite put my finger on how he does it....

Frizell is rock solid option at back of lineout, which provides three targets and very difficult to defend.

@MajorRage is amusing seeing the 'oh Italy were shit' or 'this is a poor Italian team' yet prior to kick off, some were saying italy were a shot...similarly when SA or Ireland or France or whoever pump Romania or Namibia, they did the job, were clinical...

We just pumped them by near 80, the same team that earlier this year were with in 5 of France and 14 of Ireland...

You play what's in front, the pleasing part is foe the most part we didn't lose our shape, we are stronger than the side that faced France...sure we still have some work, but if this team clicks, they will get past Ireland, and then....

@akan004 I’m certain there’s a different AB defence pattern that we’ll see in the knock outs against either of those sides.

Not a dead rubber, if Italy beat France

So it appears to me that as long as we get 5 points vs Uruguay we go through.

Thus my point Uruguay is not a dead rubber we must win it, and to guarantee we must win with a bonus point

It's as close to a dead rubber as it gets.

@MiketheSnow when there is an “injury” there is time wastage either side of the clock being stopped.

So if you have 7-8 “injuries”, it adds up.

    Not hard.

What a game! What a night! Loved the Lyon stadium set-up. Got to yarn to a few Kiwis and supporters over cold beer. JB was immense in midfield and made a real mess of their defence. Frizz was huge on defence as well, Ardie seemed to revel in more freedom. DMac was smiling, Roigard showed his quick feet, and by jeez that boy does have a slick pass! Telea the eel was his slippery self, BBBR put in some decent shots and RMo was in control. Even the shit crowd control system at the end couldn't take away from the match it was a great spectacle. On the way back we spied a crowded Italian pizzeria that was still open, so grabbed a bite to eat and downed a few cold ones. The Italians there were good value and jovial too, and we swapped anecdotes about the game over the meal and drinks. They were impressed by our strength in depth felt their boys were a bit overawed by the occasion, lamented Colt leaving and the state of their domestic league. All in all it was a fantastic and fun night, bring on Uruguay!

But the same could be said of last night's match with so many tries scored

16 tries scored = 24 minutes of conversions and trotting back to the halfway line to restart the match

Just curious, would you guys be concerned that NZ haven't had a tough game since the opener against France? Uruguay next and Foster will probably rest most of the first team players. While Ireland (if they get past the Scots) will have had a few crunch games coming straight into the quarters. It sounds reasonable that a well rested team for a big game is a plus, but maybe battle hardened could possibly be a better prep for such a game?

If there's something we can worry about we'll worry about it.

I'd like to say it's Ireland’s QF to lose.

But we're not qualified yet ...
