Probably the best of all the jokes around this right here.

Moniker stays til the series is complete.

TBH while relieved we can't lose the urn, the timing of this rain is shit.

    But I'll take it.

Especially as Piers Morgan is having yet another cry.

    Short memories.

Congratulations Australia on retaining the Ashes.

England had lots of chances to win at Egbaston and to some extent at Lords and yesterday too. You don’t win a Test without taking 20 wickets and England have only done that once in four Tests in this series.

They knew about the possibility of rain in Manchester and they knew from the start of this Test that weather forecasts suggested terrible rain for weekend.

This is not a vintage Australian team in terms of talent and technique but they are dogged and tenacious, hanging on in there at both Edgbaston and Old Trafford to get the results they needed. Credit to them. Winning ugly is still ugly.

How to avoid this situation again:

    1. Make Ashes series in England 6 or even 7 Tests long.
    2. Have reserve days for the final two Tests of a series.
    3. Fine sides for slow over rates and award runs to the opposition for very slow over rates.
    4. If washouts are forecast for Day 4 and Day 5 of a Test ( as was the case here), then allow for an extra session with floodlight if need be on Days 1, 2 and 3.

Let's also remember that England were 1/188 at Lords and threw it away.

@NTA True, but also looking back that was Australia’s best bowling of the series.

The Australian player who has impressed me most has been Alex Carey. He has been extremely tidy behind the stumps all series.

Jonny Bairstow had a good test at Old Trafford but he was sloppy in the three games before that.

There was a lot of short ball rubbish and a couple of questionable shots. England have shown they can bat better than that.

    @NTA

Not quite sure what Cummins could have said that was any better really. He didn't make it rain for God's sake.

Anyway, congrats on retaining the urn Ocker

Yeah they did genuinely win the first two tests, whatever “moral” victory England might have claimed.

I never mind the rain too much, it’s relaxing when I sleep……but it fucks me off to no end when it ruins cricket.

I think cricket could do a bit better in terms of scheduling reserve days for situations like this. Australia have retained the Ashes but there will always be a massive asterisk next to this series.

Yes. There's a formula to decide who wins a game of cricket. Something to do with runs and wickets. It is a tried and tested method.

This whole moral victory rubbish has really been carried on by the lower end of the Aus media, following on from some pretty innocuous comments by a couple of the England players immediately following the first two close losses. If anyone is banging on about it, it isn't our boys.

Regardless of what was said it was very probable ( but not a given ) that England had this test in the bag but if Marsh and Green survived long enough for a draw I’d happily laud them for it.

If someone survives and has a mammoth innings to ensure a draw I’m all for that, it’s when weather intervenes that I get annoyed.

Absolutely, such stuff is what test cricket is all about.

I said it at the time - and posted on this thread - and my mates shot me down citing the old adage

    Bat once, bat big

We should have declared at lunch on Day 3

Had the lead, had momentum, had time to bowl Australia out

The irony is if England had played for a draw at Edgbaston which they could have done rather than forcing a result, it would be 1:1 and heading to a decider at the Oval.

Fines for slow over rates do nothing, its top end professional sport - they all have plenty of money. The only thing that would work is your captain is banned for the next test if you don't get through the overs. Make the guy in charge take responsibility. The time wasting and loss of overs is scandalous.

I get annoyed enough at rugby games that take over 2hrs to get through with 30-something mins of ball-in-play time.

@TeWaio You can get docked WTC points now as well which does have an impact. I am assuming though Ashes matches fall under this

They do need to find a way to fit more overs into a day, it is painfully slow going for all teams when bowling these days. To play for 6 and a half hours in a day and still not reach 90 overs is pretty poor. Even when pushing for victory with the threat of rain, bowling 19 overs of spin out of 71, England still only managed 13 overs per hour.
