It is what it is. Weāve been saved by the rain God knows how many times.
Looking back on the series so far though, Iād say England were in better shape and have a deal less soul searching to do than Aus. England have pretty much dictated the pace of each match and in reality Aus have been clinging on. Done it well mind, but I donāt think Iāve seen an Aus side this worried about how an opposition side will play. Itās like the idea of Spazball is more in Australian minds that English minds.
All very strange and roll on the Oval. Letās hope Mark Wood is up to another test on the trot. Oh, and hereās a thing, why canāt England keep their properly fast bowlers fit?

Yeah, rain is a part of cricket unfortunately.
England were a little underdone coming into this series as opposed to Aus who had just come off winning the WTC.
The momentum has swung hugely to England and I expect them to continue on that curve at the Oval test.
Fast bowling is incredibly demanding - I think they have been unlucky to have a cluster of injuries at the same time - archer looks permanently crocked though tbh

Yeah demanding for sure. It's just that our guys seem to be injured more often than not and for longer periods. I think back to Lillee, Khan, Akram, Holding, Marshall, Johnson and they seemed to have charmed lives compared to our somewhat thinner resources. maybe it just seems that way as we have fewer options?

If play was possible in the next 40 mins, they wouldn't have taken lunch. They say they are taking it to remove it off the agenda for the day and make more play more likely.
ECB has lots of questions to ask/answer now although perhaps more in synch with the MCC and global unions. Really hotly anticipated series. WTC Australia vs and England team riding a wave of success. Hugely marketable Ashes with a colossal interest.
And it's over because of the rain.
From a sporting perspective, I've been very clear that England only have themselves blame. But from a future of sport perspective, questions do need to be answered about how to deal with the rain. Spare days etc ... My 11 year old son can't understand why it's all over without playing. He simply doesn't get why so much hype can suddenly be done without a real result.
Will that affect his interest in the next series? Honestly don't know. But it's something to think about for the authorities IMHO.

Congratulations Australia on retaining the Ashes.
England had lots of chances to win at Egbaston and to some extent at Lords and yesterday too. You donāt win a Test without taking 20 wickets and England have only done that once in four Tests in this series.
They knew about the possibility of rain in Manchester and they knew from the start of this Test that weather forecasts suggested terrible rain for weekend.
This is not a vintage Australian team in terms of talent and technique but they are dogged and tenacious, hanging on in there at both Edgbaston and Old Trafford to get the results they needed. Credit to them. Winning ugly is still ugly.
How to avoid this situation again:
- Make Ashes series in England 6 or even 7 Tests long.
- Have reserve days for the final two Tests of a series.
- Fine sides for slow over rates and award runs to the opposition for very slow over rates.
- If washouts are forecast for Day 4 and Day 5 of a Test ( as was the case here), then allow for an extra session with floodlight if need be on Days 1, 2 and 3.

Yeah they did genuinely win the first two tests, whatever āmoralā victory England might have claimed.
I never mind the rain too much, itās relaxing when I sleepā¦ā¦but it fucks me off to no end when it ruins cricket.
I think cricket could do a bit better in terms of scheduling reserve days for situations like this. Australia have retained the Ashes but there will always be a massive asterisk next to this series.

Yes. There's a formula to decide who wins a game of cricket. Something to do with runs and wickets. It is a tried and tested method.
This whole moral victory rubbish has really been carried on by the lower end of the Aus media, following on from some pretty innocuous comments by a couple of the England players immediately following the first two close losses. If anyone is banging on about it, it isn't our boys.
