Classic yarns with the retiring Dane Coles. Funny that he almost joined the Landers.
Better than the usual stuff from Sky. Wheeler was good too apart from the awkward fluffing at the end

@kiwi_expat this is mostly rubbish. He has had some good attacking players, but definitely 4th of the 5 NZ teams. I think there has been a fair bit of exaggeration about how bad the Hurricanes have been this year and for very small margins they'd be in the semis.
But once again they aren't (in the semis). That's the issue. I'd like to compete with the best not just make up the numbers. My view is the players are good enough to do much better. And at the end we had few injuries yet we still failed.

What Tahs players comments were damming or NZ u/20 players I do not remember reading that anywhere
.
There are plenty of players in the Canterbury system and at the Crusaders who talk about Penny in a positive light. -

Hurricanes awards for 2023
Player of the year: Billy Proctor >> Roigard for me but Proctor was VG
Under 20 player of the year: Harry Godfrey
Best and fairest: Ardie Savea
Rookie of the year: Harry Godfrey
Members player of the year: Cam Roigard
Hunter of the year: TK Howden
Most improved player: Devan Flanders. Others to improve were Numia, Aumua, Delany, Kirifi & Roigard
Team man of the year: Jamie Booth. I wouldn't give him any award. He went back a lot this year. But it explains his continuous selection. Hope this stops under Laidlaw. Start the best not just those with the best attitude
Surf to peak champion: Billy Proctor -
Must do better: Is it too harsh to say Jordie Barrett cost the Hurricanes a place in the semifinals? The All Black had a pretty average season by his lofty standards. By the end he had conceded the goalkicking duties to Brett Cameron and his failure to release a pass to an unmarked teammate in the dying stages of their quarterfinal proved costly when Ardie Savea was held up over the line in the very next play.
Giving up the goal kicking was the right thing to do. Cameron is just better. As he showed when he kicked them all bar 1. But his white-line-fever mistake was a mistake I hope he never makes again. It wouldn't be so bad if the Canes were still missing Cameron (as they wouldn't have had a hope in hell of winning) But they had a chance of fluking two more wins with the team almost back to full strength.
And the coaches I would give a D-. Too many bad selections (like Booth starting Iose in the last game, Sinkinson -defended well enough but offer almost nothing on attack - and one lock starting with Bl). Had the players to go all the way but blew it. I only hope Laidlaw doesn't continue to make basic mistakes in selecting the team. And massively improves the teams defense and slightly improves our attack.

Pouri Rakete Stones has extended his stay at Hurricanes but only for the one extra year , I suspect a change of forwards coach may have influenced his decision to stay the extra year
-
@Steven-Harris that's good news. I feel like he got little game time but for no real reason. Was one of our better forwards past few seasons IMO.
-
@Steven-Harris Yeah, earlier in the season I expected PR-S to leave considering how he has been treated, but now that Gibbes is gone, it makes sense to stay and see whether he'll get a fair go with a new forwards coach, whoever that may be.
-
@foobaNZ I feel like Rakete-Stones getting limited minutes is more because of how good Numia and Mafileo have been playing tbh. Numia backed up his form for Wellington this year and continued that through to the Canes, Mafileo was also good enough this year to get into the All Black XV squad, aswell as currently being injury cover for the ABs.
PRS has lost out to form rather than anything else by the looks. It's a good thing he's staying though because we need healthy depth in the propping department.
-
@Canes4life No, that's not the case. There's a whole story behind this that can't be posted here. It has nothing to do with PRS' form.
-
@Stargazer okey dokey, well no matter the case PRS wasn’t playing as well as Mafileo and Numia IMO so probably would have only seen limited minutes anyway.

Good on PRS for getting a contract extension but I was hoping he'd move to another franchise, any of the other NZ franchises instead of the Canes.
Why?. Crusader's he's unlikely to get much game time for example. Unless you believe he's clearly third best at the canes. My view it's a smart decision. One year and if he still not getting game time then make a move (maybe overseas) Knowing that he was rated third best by not one but 2 coaching teams.

Just to get away from the shitty Canes organisation.
It's like this is the first time you've come across me on here.

Can someone please ban @Nepia from posting on Canes threads? Talk about repetitive. 🥱💤
I'd forgotten he was so anti canes regardless Thought he might have had a change of heart.
