    Laidlaw knocked back the Blues.

"The Herald understands the Hurricanes have fended off the Blues to sign Laidlaw, the New Zealand Sevens and national under-20s coach, to succeed Jason Holland.

After missing out on Dave Rennie and Joe Schmidt, the Blues made a compelling pitch for Laidlaw to replace Leon MacDonald at the helm next year.

Laidlaw has, however, knocked back the Blues to commit his future to the Hurricanes."

I am relieved it's not Mark Hammett again.

    Great signing by the Hurricanes.

@mikey07 jeez that will be a massive bonus for the Canes. Love to fullback and Moorby to the wing hopefully.

@Canes4life I reckon he might be off the Bench I didn’t ask if he was starting.

Gibbes' comments seem to imply that his family isn't with him in Wellington. That's a tough situation.

As I understand it he wants to be back in TA. I’m hoping Waikato or something local will come up for him.

He’s one of the truly nice guys in the game, despite any limitations there might be with his selecting.

@mikey07 don’t all long term injured players have to make a return via the bench? Good to have him back.

@gt12 I'm never going to criticise Chris Gibbes as a coach as he took Waikato to back-to-back NPC finals and a RS win. It will be interesting to see what he does in the future.

I’m stoked at this appointment over the others mentioned. On a side note good to see Jordie, Peter, Tyrell and Reuben down here at the Wainuiomata Rugby club coaching the juniors.

That is gold these fellas down at clubs coaching juniors, especially at this time of season!!

That's why the Canes last 3 years have been so bewildering to me, Gibbes was very highly regarded when he was appointed as forwards coach back in 2019 replacing Watt (who I recall was moved on).

And the Hurricanes have got a roster where the weaknesses upfront that hurt Boyd/Plumtree's teams & especially the front-row where they actually have better options compared to when the Canes were achieving much better results 2016-19.

Is Holland such a poor coach that his influence simply permeates throughout the whole team and stinks up the entire joint?

@kiwi_expat since the Razor wanting Holland as an assistant rumours started I've always been curious what he sees in him. Guess we'll find out.

I don't know if Ozich applied - is that confirmed?

No idea, I was just providing an example of a surprise option. 😉

    @kiwi_expat

Excellent news. For a number of reasons

-He was the Canes first choice. The Canes made their decision and followed through to get a result. This is just another outcome that shows that just maybe the Canes are heading in the right direction at last.
-The Blues missed out. I had an issue with the Blues jumping in like they did. Blues should find their own options. But I hope they can find a good coach. I want to see 5 strong sides all with good coaches (will maybe not the Crusaders as it gets boring them always winning. Time for other teams to win for a few years at least)
-I'm happy to see the back of Holland and Gibbes (a similar feeling when Hammett left). They just don't quite have it with some odd selections (a lightweight forward pack) especially a 1.90 lock. And writing off good players (Lakai, Higgins and Bird for example) for whatever strange reason. Luckily the Canes have somehow signed potentially a VG team. A good or better head coach and assistant coaches could be the outright winner. Like what happened when Hammett left.
-I was sorry to see Laidlaw leave not only the Canes but also NZ back in 2015. He seemed to get the best out of players. Ok we missed out in 2015 to an in-form Highlanders squad but Barrett for example played some excellent rugby this year. We (and Barrett) just had an off game in the final. Then the decline started in 2017. But now he's back as the top dog. I just hope he can step up and lead and develop players as Wellington did last year.

What frustrates me the most about Holland's tenure is how predictable every season is, the Hurricanes are the ultimate flat track bullies under him, you already know they will put 30+ points on each Aussie side, except the Brumbies, and then lose to all the NZ teams except the Highlanders before the season has even begun. They are so utterly predictable. In the last 2 seasons Holland has lost to the Fijian Drua, Moana Pacifica, and the Force. He has not won a single match against a McMillian coached Chiefs from 6 attempts. He has won 2 games from 8 against Leon's Blues, 1 from 6 against Razor's Crusaders. 1 win from 5 against the Brumbies. This record against the top sides is simply unacceptable given the quality of players the Hurricanes have at the moment..

@kiwi_expat under Boyd and Plumtree it was almost the total opposite. Hopefully Laidlaw can turn the tide and get the most out the talent we have available.

I'm very glad the Holland years are over soon. Hopefully the end of some baffling selections, and some actual nuance in our game so we can beat some of the better teams consistently.
