Well. I'm kinda surprised by that. The "safe" option would have been one of those other mooted mediocre options.
Of the rumoured candidates Laidlaw was my preference so good luck to him!
Wouldn't it be great if he got guys like O'Halloran in the coaches box with him.
Isn't he a safe option being a former Canes assistant and high profile national coach? Ozich (for example) would be a surprise option.

really, where did you hear that from?
Planet rugby. Its been mentioned on a Canes thread
Yep from someone who knows his team mates at club.

Stoked for Laidlaw. He should definitely be an upgrade to Holland so best of luck to him. I wonder who he will bring in as an assistant.

@Nepia I see where you're coming from, but he's been coaching sevens for years now, and doesn't have 15s head coach experience I think.
It would be safer for the Canes to pick ex AB assistant X or Y. But those options were bad so I'm happy with this.
I don't know if Ozich applied - is that confirmed?
I hope his assistants are fresh faces (to the Canes). I think we need a clean break from the current coaching group.

good to see Jordie, Peter, Tyrell and Reuben down here at the Wainuiomata Rugby club coaching the juniors
That's because of this:
hurricanesrugby Our final instalment of Canes in Clubs for the year, see you there!

Laidlaw knocked back the Blues.
"The Herald understands the Hurricanes have fended off the Blues to sign Laidlaw, the New Zealand Sevens and national under-20s coach, to succeed Jason Holland.
After missing out on Dave Rennie and Joe Schmidt, the Blues made a compelling pitch for Laidlaw to replace Leon MacDonald at the helm next year.
Laidlaw has, however, knocked back the Blues to commit his future to the Hurricanes."

@Canes4life This weekend he said he’s back

@Canes4life I reckon he might be off the Bench I didn’t ask if he was starting.

Gibbes' comments seem to imply that his family isn't with him in Wellington. That's a tough situation.
As I understand it he wants to be back in TA. I’m hoping Waikato or something local will come up for him.
He’s one of the truly nice guys in the game, despite any limitations there might be with his selecting.

I’m stoked at this appointment over the others mentioned. On a side note good to see Jordie, Peter, Tyrell and Reuben down here at the Wainuiomata Rugby club coaching the juniors.
That is gold these fellas down at clubs coaching juniors, especially at this time of season!!

@gt12 I'm never going to criticise Chris Gibbes as a coach as he took Waikato to back-to-back NPC finals and a RS win. It will be interesting to see what he does in the future.
That's why the Canes last 3 years have been so bewildering to me, Gibbes was very highly regarded when he was appointed as forwards coach back in 2019 replacing Watt (who I recall was moved on).
And the Hurricanes have got a roster where the weaknesses upfront that hurt Boyd/Plumtree's teams & especially the front-row where they actually have better options compared to when the Canes were achieving much better results 2016-19.
Is Holland such a poor coach that his influence simply permeates throughout the whole team and stinks up the entire joint?
