I like Angus T, Joe Wheeler and Bryn Hall as the up and coming, Wheeler made that one racist error but he seems down to earth. Hames is horrid also. I actually don't mind Morgan T in Australia, seems fair and knowledgeable.

Yeah I remember that. How dare he not think that a middle aged white woman might be offended on behalf of asians. What an idiot. I’m shocked and appalled he still has a job. I hope he’s taken the time to re educate himself.

@Canes4life I just suggested him as someone that sounds like they enjoy watching rugby. Most of the others just complain about scrums, laws they dislike etc etc

I'm struggling to think of a good co-commentator currently used by sky. Do you have suggestion from their current group?

Yeah it’s a bit of a struggle thinking of anyone to be honest. Sky really need to do better.

I actually really like Bryn Hall and James Parsons as presenters (not commentators). Obviously Hall is still playing but I enjoy Parson’s comments on the Rugby Pod show.

He definitely offers a lot more than the likes of Wheeler, Te Nana etc

Almost all of the ex-players are terrible, SBW being the peak of that. It's not surprising: most of them were great players based on physical attributes, not their analysis or speaking skills. Someone like Mehrtens is an exception, and Nonu's cameos were a breath of fresh air - but in general I reckon even mid-level coaches would be a better bet than ex-players.
Less celebrity more competence is probably wishful thinking though.

I wish they would get ex-coaches instead of ex-players.

Agree that McTanish is the best commentator going around, they just need to bite the bullet and make the change.

Who is going to tell the ref he's wrong and talk over the explanation?

    Good riddance champ

This sums up neatly why I can't stand his commentary. Often I want to hear the ref's explanation so I can know what he's seen and why he made that decision. Marshall constantly fucking ruins that desired experience. He doesn't possess the intellect or self awareness to STFU.

Marshall writes good columns doesn’t he or does it just seem that way compared to Rattue and Reason ?

Parsons would be good in the commentary box if he behaved the same way he does on the podcast. For some reason he's decided to be the second coming of Chris Handy when he commentates

Well that's really surprising. Hope any video of the bogan toddler dummy spit sees the light of day.

Nisbett is by far our best at calling the game. He's always had a habit of misidentifying players though, and that's only gotten worse with age, but he's still light-years ahead of TJ.

He really needs a strong co-commentator though. He gets made to look worse when he agrees with some verifiably incorrect thing Marshall has said. The co-commentator has to be level headed and a good analyst of the game that provides insights into what just happened. I guess NZ doesn't have a big enough market for there to be many people that would choose that as a career path, so we fall back on ex-players who are honestly a lot worse than the average Fern poster.

Parsons hints at being suited for an analyst role, but I can't help but thinking that he gets given stats and does a lot of preparation before the show. What we need is someone who can give some analysis in the moment.

Does Parsons still wear his headgear when he commentates?

Ex-players, who are also (ex-)referees, might be the exception. Or just good (ex-)referees. They had Glen Jackson on the Breakdown a few years ago and he was really good. He's coaching now, so not sure he's available. I wonder whether Mike Fraser, who recently retired as a ref and is now a high performance referee coach, would be good as a (guest) commentator. There must be a few others.

Bring back Fox! And Sumo (not the whiny, alltheplayersaremycrew one).

I've always felt Marshall is a much better analyst than commentator, particularly when he used to do articles for stuff or the herald.

Think in the commentator box he let's his emotions get the better of him and speaks before thinking

I find his TV analysis, particularly on replays, is often really good - sometimes brilliant. I also like the way he gets emotional/excited about great rugby whoever's playing, Don't like how acts a bit like a buffoon and he jumps to the wrong conclusions way too often.

Overall he adds colour and context and there are way worse comments people out there.

Apart from Rikki Swannell, I don't rate most of the commentators highly,

She's great and up there with Andrew Cotter in my book. Love to see her doing more top level rugby

It's ok on replay but fucking atrocious on live play.

As soon as Marshall starts talking about how everyone's positioned and what play they're going to do, dollars to donuts it's going to be pretty much the opposite. I guess it is quite good because when he calls it you know you don't have to look out for that.
