NSW Bans Greyhound Racing

they don't see the point in reward-based training? they don't see the point of 'if i do this, i get that'? gotta be pretty fucking thick then.

What is the point? A snack? A cat doesn't see the point in demeaning itself for food it will get fed anyway. If you were fed enough would you act like a clown or do something you didn't want to do for a cracker? -

When will horse racing be in the firing line? in Australia being more realistic and perhaps with a precedent now?

It's a debate that will no doubt gain some traction now but will be fought on a very different field and a lot more variables

Note: i have no problem with either animal racing but do have a problem with pointless or lazy animal cruelty. Although perhaps I'm a hypocrite because I LOVE catching live rats for my Jack Russells (and they LOVE me doing it!)
-

Well Dogs are pretty much obsessed with food so reward based training is pretty easy with them. Cats are more obsessed with lying in the sun or playing with mice which they can do at their own leisure. If you try reward based training with a cat it will just look at you as if you are an idiot.

Nah, they don't think humans are stupid, they just won't do stupid things for humans for some halfarsed treat.

Ever wondered why dogs aren't allowed to run free why cats are? Because dogs are likely to bite someone or run after and try and bite a car. In other words dogs are too farking stupid to be left alone. -

in the country dogs run free - they know where they are allowed to go, and what they are allowed to do. cats won't learn that. dogs being larger and stronger and potentially more dangerous is the reason for being more careful with them, not brain power.

i reckon if you tried to train a cat with rewards - and starvation as the other option - it still wouldn't learn.
-
Nah they'd rather hunt for their food

Think it's still a while away. Ultimately horses are much bigger creatures than dogs, and way less expendable.

There are issues with cruelty for sure, but it's far more isolated and much easier to police. Whereas the greyhound issues were so endemic and widespread that there was never any real hope of fixing them.
-

Had a pretty shitty experience with Greyhound racing. Im not a punter but went along once to hutt park and saw not one but at least 5 dogs getting the shit beaten out of them. Complained to who i thought was an adjudicator and was told "the dogs are fine." Turned me off the racing industry completely. I know not everyone is an arsehole and greyhounds arent horses but it just left a mark.

Most studies suggests dogs are smarter than cats. (brain weight adjusted for body mass)

Studies also show more social animals tend to be smarter.

.

Cats are less fuss because they don't really have the EQ of dogs, nor the social needs.
-

Generally they make hopeless pets as they are train to chase and kill pretty much. Our Neighbour had one and it had to be put down eventually. Cleaned up all the Rabbits on the farm but.... and all the domestic cats in the district..... :)

Not sure of the downside with this dog your neighbour had. Does it have any surviving brothers and sisters? ............asking on behalf of a friend.
-

Pah. Those studies were conducted and peer reviewed by beret wearing poodle lovers. -

My son has been talking about wanting a dog. Since there will be thousands of greyhounds around soon I asked him if he might be interested. He asked me what a greyhound was. I googled him up an image and he just looked at me as though I was playing a sick joke on him.

I can't see this whole thing ending well for the animals involved. If it is all about their welfare then surely they won't be permitted to sell them or move them interstate? Doesn't it completely defeat the purpose to ban a sport but then allow the dogs to be moved to exactly the same industry in another state? Is there any evidence that they treat the dogs better in Qld and Vic? -

It seems incredible that at one time the Bull Terrier was a handsome, athletic dog. Somewhere along its journey to a mutated skull and thick abdomen the bull terrier also picked up a number of other maladies like supernumerary teeth and compulsive tail-chasing.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound has gotten lower, has suffered changes to its rear leg structure, has excessive skin, vertebra problems, droopy eyes prone to entropion and ectropion and excessively large ears.

Boxer

A shorter face means a host of problems. The modern Boxer not only has a shorter face but the muzzle is slightly upturned. The boxer – like all bracecyphalic dogs – has difficulty controlling its temperature in hot weather, the inability to shed heat places limits on physical performance. It also has one of the highest cancer rates.

German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd Dog is also a breed that is routinely mentioned when people talk about ruined breeds; maybe because they used to be awesome. In Dogs of All Nations, the GSD is described as a medium-sized dog (25 kg /55 lb), this is a far cry from the angulated, barrel-chested, sloping back, ataxic, 85-pounders (38 kg) we are used to seeing in the conformation ring. There was a time when the GSD could clear a 2.5 meter (8.5 ft) wall, that time is long gone.

Bulldog

The English bulldog has come to symbolize all that is wrong with the dog fancy and not without good reason; they suffer from almost every possible disease. A 2004 survey by the Kennel Club found that they die at the median age of 6.25 years (n=180). There really is no such thing as a healthy bulldog. The bulldog’s monstrous proportions makes them virtually incapable of mating or birthing without medical intervention.

Dachshund

The Dachshund used to have functional legs and necks that made sense for their size. Backs and necks have gotten longer, chest jutted forward and legs have shrunk to such proportions that there is barely any clearance between the chest and floor. The dachschund has the highest risk of any breed for intervertebral disc disease which can result in paralysis; they are also prone to achondroplastic related pathologies, PRA and problems with their legs.

St. Bernard

Once a noble working dog, the modern St. Bernard has been oversized, had it’s faced squished in, and bred for abundant skin. You will not see this type of dog working, they can’t handle it as they quickly overheat. The diseases include entropion, ectropion, Stockard’s paralysis, hemophilia, osteosarcoma, aphakia, fibrinogen deficiency.

Pug

The Pug is another extreme brachycephalic breed and it has all the problems associated with that trait – high blood pressure, heart problems, low oxygenation, difficulty breathing, tendency to overheat, dentition problems, and skin fold dermatitis. The highly desirable double-curl tail is actually a genetic defect, in more serious forms it leads to paralysis.

This will probably be downvoted to oblivion - because I know you all love to squish these dogs. But I think it is important to recognize that the traits that we "love" about some breeds are being enhanced simply for aesthetic pleasure - and that this enhancement might be causing these breeds serious defects and medical health issues.

Yes.

In NZ you must take your horses to the track for training at least once a month I think it is. (Most train at track in any case, even the biggest stables)

It creates a way of watching how horses are treated.

Horses can only breed one horse per year so there are limited numbers to have to re home if they are shit. Unlike dogs where a bitch could have 20 puppies per year.

I find that most horse people get very attached to horses too. We have sent one horse to dog food in five years. Only because she was hopeless and an utter bitch which made her impossible to re home.
