take away his pace and he would have been fucked

Take away half of Taukieaho and he won't be very good at hitting and carting the ball up, I don't think that means he's not fit for his role.
Apologies Bones. I didn't articulate the point well enough.
Rieko scrambled really well and made some super tackles around the legs at full stretch. We would have lost without his tackles. However I never remember Conrad having to chase in such desperation. He was always in the right place and never seemed to be out of his comfort zone. Riekos pace in my opinion made up for some initial poor positioning.
I don't think his defensive reads are good enough. And as European cup winning manager Ronan O Gara stated 3 weeks ago : He is clearly a winger playing at centre.
Its akin to football where they say if you need to make a last ditch sliding tackle maybe you were out of position in the first place.
@Bones is terrific for memes and self deprecating wit but gee whiz you certainly don’t take any Rugby related chat too seriously. He’s clueless.

Pretty much only in the picture as a 12 now.
Which is where Foster, probably wisely, sees/saw his future in the team. Hope Reiko plays as well as he did last Saturday for a few more games to cement the 1 slot. IMHO having someone nailed on there would be a huge step forward.

Yeah but different styles of defence eh. You probably wouldn't have seen Smith scrambling back as quickly on defence and being one of the first ones to defend the tryline again and again like Rieko did against Ireland.
Smith learned his trade the same way Rieko will.

Coming into the home stages the ABs are carrying several back up players:
Ennor
Dickson
Lomax
Newell
Patty T (arguably)It seems reasonable to expect most to be released.
Ennor and Dickson are the easy ones, in the assumption Patty covers Lord’s absence.
But five THs currently in squad, almost certainly a record.
The two covers played in last test, so harsh to discard.
Does Angus get released and could they fudge Newell as ‘apprentice’?Any word on grapevine?

Great point pakman I was wondering same myself. Assume they would return to where they came from? Or will they just say we making changes. Think Pat T was named in original squad, but would like to see Newell and Lomax stay in.
Dickson,Lomax and Ennor were definitely named for SA leg of championship only, so will be interesting. -

Wow. That is a big call.
One I support but they managed to slide that in the middle of the statement.
Basically dumped and we are going to invest elsewhere. -

So many people's midfield great white hope is out, foster needs to pick and stick until the RWC

They will be there as fallback for sure and I might be putting two and two together here but when asked last week if the SA2 game personnel changes had shown a way forward and some problems looked closer to be solved, Foster said he thought that was the case.
Whether right or wrong he looks to me to be embracing the idea that the old FR brigade weren't indispensable after all. Also I think that maybe it exposed one of the old tenets of the game that other teams realised wasn't necessarily the case a while back. Young dynamic players, as long as they can front up, over more to the game under the current directives than old veterans.
Scrums are allowed to look dominated or or dominant without any repercussions as long as the ball comes out. As long as you don't collapse or wheel it doesn't matter if you move your opposite back a metre nowdays. The backlines are set back from the scrum anyway and don't adjust when the scrum moves. Once the setup is there the refs don't give a shit if the 5metres is kept -

Yeah ok. It's got nothing to do with the fact that he played at 12 for the NZ U20 and won player of the year in that position for Canterbury.
This is not correct. He started most of his games at fullback for Canterbury. He also had some starts at 12 and one at 13, but his primary position was fullback
He initially started the season at FB, but was then 12 and he ended at 13 because Goodhue was injured. Regardless, the combo he formed with Goodhue looked really good and I wish he'd stayed down there to continue that. I've always said that I would rather him play at 12 for the Saders than 15 for the Canes.
Why? Do you want all the ABs to play for the Saders? Super rugby should be a standalone competition IMHO not just a feeder for the ABs.
-
@Machpants I think Goodhue just needs time to get his body right, but I think AB rugby may have passed him by unfortunately, although I think his class is there to see with his game and his organisation on defence is a huge factor.

Maybe. And agree we need to give one combination lots of game time. But its always good to have back-ups with test experience in case of injuries.

Interesting that Schmidt has taken over his Selectors role and a role in the attack, Ennor is retained.

It was interesting to hear Foster perk up and agree when asked after the JoBurg game whether we'd just seen the future of the AB propping stocks.
